Deramores Blog Competition 2015

Edit: Links to Deramores removed after it’s closure in January 2022

Have you heard about the Deramores Blog Competition 2015? Well its a fabulous competition open to all crochet (and knitting) bloggers worldwide about how we draw inspiration from the latest trends or favourite themes. Deramores have teamed up with six seriously brilliant bloggers who all have all blogged about their favourite trends; and all I had to do to enter (eek!) is to blog about my unique take on any of these trends.

The trend I most identified with and have already been completely inspired by is Large Motifs which was predicted as a trend by Dedri Uys from Look What I Made. You can read her full post about the trend here

I think there has been a definite surge in the popularity of larger motifs/squares recently and the trend for squares certainly appears to be for 12 inches and upwards!  I’ve been using 12 inch squares in the CAL and I’ve noticed that there are now more blocks available for this size (or larger) as talented designers supply to the demand of a captive audience of which I am most definitely one!

As a designer I think you can’t fail to be inspired by some of the larger motifs that have been released recently. Numerous colours, multi-stitch details – it’s a crocheters / designers dream!  Just looking at designs like Sophie’s Garden (above) Sophie’s Universe, Mandala Blanket, CAL-Crochet Club 2013 and Rings of Change completely start an internal war inside me…I want to make that versus I want to design something like that!  So this competition was the perfect excuse for me to try to design a square larger, more intricate, include more stitches and colours then I ever have before…

Are you ready for the big reveal?  I’ve been working on this little project for about a month and it’s been the most fun / challenging things I have EVER tried to do but I’m really pleased with how it’s turned out.  I’m proud to introduce my Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds Square (and yes I have been singing the song in my head the whole time I’ve been making it)!

This block 20 x 20 inch block WAS inspired by The Beatles song of the same name and I’ve tried to incorporate parts of the lyrics into the pattern (see how many bits you can spot!)

I deliberated for ages about the colours; I knew that I had to have a marmalade and tangerine orangy colour at least and some yellow… I then wanted to get a blue in for the river so the blues, greens and white came next.  I did try a greener green but that didn’t seem to work as well as the teal green.

The seven colours and yarn I used are; Sirdar Hayfield Bonus Double Knit in White, Primrose, Pumpkin, Spearmint, Azure, Rusty and Pine all from my stash.

The most painful part was once I thought I had finished only to realise I had missed a diamond off one side so I had to pull it back and redo it!

And the pattern…well let me work on it, but I’ll be sure to let you know once it’s ready!
