Bookish Stitches: March’s Book Blanket Progress

March has been a whirlwind of reading and stitching, and I’m excited to share the latest progress on my Crochet Book Blanket project for 2025! This project continues to bring together two of my favourite things—books and crochet—as I create a unique square for each book I’ve read this year.

I’ve been asked how I manage to read so much, whether I own all these books or if I buy them, and what my favourite genre is…

The answer is that I’ve made a habit of setting aside time each day—at least 30-45 minutes before bed—and I grab any extra reading time whenever I can. I do have a lot of books at home, and I’m a sucker for a second-hand book bargain. I love browsing charity shops (or thrift stores, as they’re called in the U.S.) to discover hidden treasures. I’m also inspired by books I come across on Goodreads or social media, so I do occasionally pick up new releases. As for my favourite genre, I’d say I fall somewhere between thrillers and historical fiction, but I like to think of myself as an eclectic reader—I enjoy all sorts of stories!

The Vision for the Book Afghan

To maintain cohesion, I’ve used the same block pattern for the entire afghan (grab the free pattern here), working with yarn from my stash and selecting colours that reflect the book’s cover design. The ultimate goal? A warm, meaningful blanket that doubles as a literary keepsake.

Here’s what I accomplished in March:

March Reads and Squares

Book 13: The Fury by Alex Michaelides

Synopsis: An interesting psychological thriller set on a secluded Greek island. The story follows Elliot Chase, a troubled playwright who becomes entangled in a web of secrets, betrayals, and murder during a gathering at the island estate of retired actress Lana Farrar. As tensions escalate among the guests, Elliot’s obsession with Lana and his manipulative actions lead to a series of shocking events!

My Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ 4 stars (out of 5)

Book 14: The One by John Marrs

Synopsis: Really enjoyed the unique premise for this book. The One is a gripping psychological thriller with a sci-fi twist. In a world where a simple DNA test can identify your perfect soulmate, five strangers take the test, each hoping for true love. But as they meet their matches, shocking secrets, unexpected dangers, and dark consequences unravel, proving that finding “The One” might not lead to a happily ever after.

My Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ 4 stars (out of 5)

Book 15: Everything, Everything by Nicola Yoon

Synopsis: A heart-warming and emotional novel which follows Maddy, a teenager who has spent her entire life in isolation due to a rare illness, and Olly, the boy next door who makes her question everything she thought she knew about safety and love. As their connection grows, Maddy must decide whether some risks are worth taking for the chance at truly living. I really enjoyed this book—it’s a beautifully written, thought-provoking story that stays with you long after you turn the last page!

My Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ 4 stars (out of 5)

Book 16: The Women by Kristin Hannah

Synopsis: A powerful historical novel that follows Frances “Frankie” McGrath, a young nursing student from California’s Coronado Island. In 1965, driven by a desire to make a difference, she joins the Army Nurse Corps and is thrust into the chaos of the Vietnam War. There, she confronts the brutal realities of combat and forms deep bonds with fellow nurses. Upon returning home, Frankie faces a divided America, grappling with her own trauma and the nation’s indifference toward female veterans.

My Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ 4 stars (out of 5)

Book 17: Too Late by Colleen Hoover

Synopsis: Trigger warnings for domestic and sexual abuse. This is a twisty dark, intense romantic thriller that follows the story of Sloan, a young woman trapped in an abusive relationship with a powerful man. As she becomes involved with a man named Carter the emotional and physical stakes escalate. Sloan must make life-altering choices to escape her nightmare, but the path to freedom is fraught with difficult decisions.

My Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ 4 stars (out of 5)

Book 18: The Inmate by Frieda McFadden

Synopsis: The Inmate is a gripping psychological thriller packed with twists and tension. When Brooke returns to her hometown to work as a prison nurse, she’s forced to confront her dark past—especially since her ex-boyfriend and father of her child, Shane, is one of the inmates, convicted of a brutal murder. But as unsettling clues emerge, Brooke begins to question whether Shane was truly guilty or if the real killer is still out there. I love how fast-paced McFadden’s books always are—this one kept me hooked from start to finish!

My Rating: ⭐⭐⭐ 3 stars (out of 5)

Book 19: Black Woods, Blue Sky by Eowyn Ivey

Synopsis: A really unique and poignant novel set in the Alaskan wilderness, following Birdie, a young single mother and her six-year-old daughter, Emaleen. Their lives change when Arthur, a reclusive man living in the mountains, brings Emaleen back after she wanders into the woods. Intrigued by Arthur, Birdie and Emaleen move into his cabin, embracing a life closer to nature. However, as they adapt to this new life, they uncover unsettling truths about Arthur’s past, leading to a tense and thought-provoking journey.

My Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ 4 stars (out of 5)

Book 20: The Bullet that Missed by Richard Osman

Synopsis: The third instalment in the Thursday Murder Club series, and it was such an enjoyable read! I found myself smiling throughout – Osman’s humour really shines through, and I appreciate the warmth and comfort these books bring. The quirky characters and clever plot twists make it a delightful mystery, but it’s the charming, feel-good nature of the story that keeps me coming back for more. A solid 4 stars, and I can’t wait for the next one! 😊

My Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐4 stars (out of 5)
