January has been a cosy month filled with yarn, hooks, and plenty of literary inspiration as I dive into my Crochet Book Blanket project for 2025. My challenge this year is to combine my love of reading and crochet by creating a blanket where each square represents a book I’ve read. I’m thrilled to share my progress and reflections on both the stories and the stitches they’ve inspired.
The Vision for the Book Afghan
To maintain cohesion, I’ve used the same block pattern for the entire afghan (grab the free pattern here), working with yarn from my stash and selecting colours that reflect and are closest to (as I’m not buying new yarn!) the book’s cover design. The ultimate goal? A warm, meaningful blanket that doubles as a literary keepsake.
Here’s what I accomplished in January:
- Total Books Read: and Squares Completed: 4 books and 8 squares!

January Reads and Squares
Book 1: My Grandmother Sends her Regards and Apologies by Fredrick Backman
Synopsis: My Grandmother Sends Her Regards and Apologises by Fredrik Backman follows Elsa, a spirited seven-year-old, as she embarks on a treasure hunt left by her eccentric grandmother. Through letters of apology, Elsa uncovers hidden stories, unexpected friendships, and the enduring power of love and forgiveness.
My Rating: ⭐⭐⭐ 3 stars (out of 5)
Book 2: The First to Die at the End by Adam Silvera
Synopsis: The First to Die at the End is a poignant prequel to They Both Die at the End. In a world where Death-Cast predicts the final day of your life, Orion and Valentino meet on the eve of its launch. As their connection deepens, they confront love, fate, and the fragile beauty of living with the certainty of dying.
My Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ 4 stars (out of 5)
Book 3: All the Wicked Girls by Chris Whitaker
Synopsis: A gripping gritty mystery set in a small Southern town where the disappearance of a teenage girl, Summer Ryan, rattles the community. As her twin sister, Raine, searches for answers, buried secrets and dark truths about their neighbours come to light. Atmospheric and haunting!
My Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ 4 stars (out of 5)
Book 4: The Quiet Tenant by Clémence Michallon
Synopsis: A chilling psychological thriller about Aidan Thomas, a seemingly kind widower and father, who hides a dark secret—a woman he’s kept captive in his home for years. As he moves to a new town with his teenage daughter, the prisoner must navigate a precarious balance between survival and escape. Tense and haunting!
My Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ 4 stars (out of 5)

Looking Ahead to February
I’m excited to continue this journey! It’s amazing how each square becomes a prompt for each book I’ve read as I remember each story as I add more rounds.
Are you joining in too, I’ve love to hear how you are getting on. Do you have a favourite book that would make a great square for my afghan? I’d love to hear your suggestions!
Stay tuned for next month’s updates. Until then, happy hooking and happy reading!

This is such a great idea and the squares are looking really good! I might do one next year!
Thank you, I’m definitely enjoying it and it’s encouraging me to keep up with my reading 📖
Do you have a goal for your reading for the year? Or are you just going to see what happens?
I’m just going to see what happens, but I’m hoping for a good blanket, part of the reason I’m making two squares for each book, and partly two squares I’m hoping will give the blanket a bit of overall cohesion 😄
It’s going to look so great when you’re done!
I love this idea! I’m very new to crochet and I’m looking forward to seeing how it looks when you’re done.
Thank you, I’m enjoying it so far! Do you have any book recommendations?
