Welcome to the Mischievous Magpie Crochet Makealong for the summer of 2024! It’s the seventh annual makealong that myself and the lovely and talented yarn dyer Kitey, aka The Yarn Whisperer have collaborated on (you can see the details of all previous CALs and MALs here).
Just like our previous endeavours, this makealong promises to be filled with creativity, community, and of course, crochet magic. As we embark on this journey together, let’s set the scene for the mischievous magpie – our inspiration for this summer’s creations.
In the heart of a lush, green forest nestled a cosy nest atop a tall oak tree. This wasn’t just any nest; it was the home of the most mischievous magpie in the entire woodland. The iridescence of the magpie’s wings shimmered in a mesmerising display of natural artistry with hues of midnight blue, tones of black and glimmers of white.
We watch as the magpie swoops down to the forest floor, drawn by a glimmering object nestled among the foliage – a shiny crochet hook, its surface sparkling like a hidden treasure. With an impish gleam in her eye, the magpie has seized the hook in her beak and whisked it away to her treetop nest.
Intrigued by the magpie’s discovery, we follow her as she darts through the trees, her prize clutched tightly in her beak. With each graceful movement, the magpie’s fascination with the hook is evident, her curiosity piqued by its shimmering allure.
With a newfound sense of purpose, we gather supplies— our own favourite crochet hook, three skeins of yarn, and a dash of determination. Then as we settle in beneath the shade of a towering oak tree, let us fill ourselves full of that wonderful feeling of anticipation that a new project brings!
As we draw inspiration from the enchanting world of the mischievous magpie, let’s spread our wings and soar to new heights of creativity. Whether you’re a seasoned crocheter or just beginning your journey with yarn and hook, there’s a place for you in this vibrant community of makers. 🖤 New to MALS?
If you’ve not joined us before a MAL, or make along is when a specific pattern is released with all of the details required to make the design, along with a specific start date for everyone to begin their project, together. Then, unlike a crochet-along where you often have segments of the pattern released over a number of weeks, you have the pattern in full with just an end date to make it by. It’s a relaxed way to make a project as you can work at your own pace, but there is a deadline to hold you accountable should you need one.
🖤 When will it happen?
The Make Along will run from 1 June to 19 July 2024; you can of course start the pattern at anytime you wish, this deadline is just there for those that like to have one.

🖤 What are we making?
This time round we are going to be making a shaped scarf / shawlette. The yarn will be sent out end of April / beginning of May, and the pattern will be sent to you on the 30 / 31May for the start of the MAL on the 1 June 2024.
The pattern will be sent to the same email that you ordered the yarn from, make sure we are on your saved senders list so it doesn’t go to your spam or junk folder.
Skills needed: Basic crochet stitches, missing stitches, crocheting two stitches together, working in rows, increasing to create shape
Hook needed: 3mm (Closest US size D/3)
Terminology: The pattern will be available in both UK and US crochet terminology
🖤 How will it work?
An exclusive pattern and kit are being created for this extra special MAL. Each kit will include the following super washed merino 4ply (Sock weight) yarn;
- 1x 50g / 212m skein of natural yarn
- 1x 50g / 212m skeins of an exclusive hand-dyed colourway
- 1 x 100g / 425m of another exclusive sparkle hand-dyed colourway
- Exclusive @mrsgmakes stitch markers
- A digital copy of the pattern
Pre-ordered kits will be available for £45 + postage, and can be made on The Yarn Whisperer website from 10 am on 1 April and if you order in the first 12 hours you can enjoy a 10% Early Bird discount.
Kits will be dyed to order over the coming weeks, with generally a 1 week turn-around from order to shipping. But get in quick to ensure you get yours in plenty of time to crochet along with us!
Last International orders will be shipped by last week of April if ordered by the end of June. UK orders will continue to be shipped after this date but ordering early ensures your kit arrives in plenty of time to join us on 1 June 2024.
🖤 Is support available for this MAL?
There will be support for the pattern as usual in my Facebook group; the KCACO-UK Crochet Community Group.
You can also pop in and join in with the Virtual Stitch-n-B*tch sessions hosted by Kitey on Tuesday’s evenings from 8pm GMT (see full details on Kitey’s Insta page). These sessions are a bit like going to a virtual knit and natter group, and everyone there is really lovely and helpful.
