Back in 2020 I was honoured to be asked to create an official Royal British Legion (RBL) crochet poppy design for Deramores. With the closure of Deramores (in Feb 2022) I’ve been slowly working my way through any associated patterns to add to my pattern shops, however as this was a pattern was originally designed in collaboration with a charity it’s been a bit of a different task to sort out.

The poppy is a well-known and well-established symbol, one that carries a wealth of history and meaning with it. It’s a symbol of both remembrance and hope for a peaceful future. Personally it always makes me think of my Granddad who fought in World War 2.

I’ve thought about the best way to move forward with this pattern and this is what I have come up with. This poppy pattern will cost £2.50 (approx. $3.05) and will be available in all of my pattern stores (see links below).

For the sake of the re-release and transparency for every purchase made I will donate 100% of the RRP to the Royal British Legion to support the Armed Forces community. My time for setting up the PDFs, any pattern admin, platform fees and adding the patterns to the pattern store I’ll be doing free of charge. Totals will be totted up yearly and any amounts will go directly to the Royal British Legion.

In the new update, I’ve included step-by-step photos for the poppy pattern to make it even easier to follow along! These visuals will guide you through each stage of the process, helping you see exactly how your project should look as it comes together. Whether you’re a beginner or just need a little extra guidance, these photos will take you through the details, ensuring a smoother and more enjoyable crochet experience.

For your poppies you can use any weight yarn but I would recommend a DK (Light worsted weight yarn), such as Paintbox Simply DK in Rose Red, Grass Green and Pure Black, 3.25mm (US size D/3) hook. For reference an average sized 100g (276m / 302yds) ball of red yarn you can easily make about 20 poppies.

There’s no wrong way to wear a poppy, you could glue gun them to a headband, wreath, blanket or cushion, or just add a brooch pin, to honour and remember the service and the sacrifice of those within the Armed Forces. And if like me, you’re wearing a poppy from a previous year, you can make sure you still go and donate a couple of quid to such a worthy charity.
