Amineko Crocheted Cat 🐱 | Pattern Review

Disclaimer: This pattern is one I have purchased (or used) for my own benefit.  I have not been financially compensated by the designer to write this review. All opinions expressed are my own and based on my own experiences of using the book / pattern.

If you like crochet and amigurumi then chances are that you have come across this pattern at some point and may even have made one of these fabulous little kitties!

I have a lovely Japanese sister-in-law so I did know that ‘neko‘ means cat in Japanese and an Amigurumi is the Japanese art of crocheting small cute stuffed animals… so ‘Amineko’ is a shortened version for amigurumi cat and they don’t come much cuter than this little fellow I think.

5152885504_c45e4b43f1_z

I’ve had this pattern saved for ages! But it wasn’t until my daughters school sent out the request for tombola items for their summer fete that I finally decided I had to give it a go.

So without further ado here is my finished kitty…

02.jpg

He can sit, kneel, and just chill out…

03.jpg

I love how pose-able these little cats are…

04.jpg

And then it was time for him to go off to the tombola…

01.jpg

The pattern for Amineko is a free on Ravelry: Amineko Crocheted Cat by Nekoyama.

I used the diagram on the linked website to create my kitty and found that it was simple enough to follow though the mouth section gave me pause – until I realised it’s worked as a solid flattened oval that you turn on it’s side.

I would say that it’s an easy enough pattern for beginners to have a go at as you only use one stitch; UK double crochet / US single crochet. For this reason it doesn’t take too long to make up a cat, I think I had mine finished within a few evenings.

I made my kitty using Stylecraft Special Double Knit (8ply yarn) in Denim and White rather than fingering (4ply yarn) using a 3.75mm / US size F hook. I was still surprised that my cat seemed to come out quite large in the end – I would say at least 8 inches (20.3cm) sitting down. That said you can easily make up a kitty with one ball of yarn or I think a cat would look equally fun with different colour head, body, arms and legs which makes the pattern a great little stash buster for oddments.

Such a fun pattern to make and I loved how my Amineko turned out in the end – I’m sure I will make more of these cats in the future.

Until next time; keep calm and crochet on my friends xx

Doodle Zoo No. 9: Rory the Lion | Free Pattern

Ooops first I need to apologise for my lateness with my next Doodle animal. You may have noticed I’ve been a tad absent lately on the blog apart from CAL postings.  Well it’s pretty much just a case of life just getting in the way of things at the moment…I’m hoping they will improve shortly so I can get back on track with more regular postings.

But any way right now it’s time for Doodle Zoo character no. 9! Let me introduce to you Rory the Lion! Tah-dah!

01+Logo

If you haven’t heard about Doodle Zoo it’s my mini challenge to myself this year to design 12 free little animals built on one simple base design so they all look related. For details about the other Doodle Zoo characters; see my posts about Doodle Duck, Rowan Rabbit, Finlay Frog, Ezra Elephant, Peggy Panda, Petunia Pig, Ruby the Dragon and Kimberlie Koala.

I’m still planning on 12 little characters to form the eclectic menagerie that is our Doodle zoo so watch this space for future additions!

All the Doodle Zoo animals are designed to work up in about an hour and because they are just the right hand size they become very steal-able so be prepared to make a few! Furthermore Rory is a great little stash buster only using about 30g / 90 yards of yarn. Rory would also make a cute additional gift for family and friends or an quick addition to a craft stall.

This is an easy pattern suitable for beginners looking to learn some new crochet techniques. Click here to add this pattern to your favourites / queue on Ravelry or click here to access on Craftsy or scroll down for the pattern.

June in a Nutshell | 2015

Crochet wise it’s been another busy month for me; I released my free Doodle Zoo pattern Peggy Panda into the world (which I blogged about here) and the rest of the time I was busy working on other crochet projects.

I went completely out of my comfort zone this month and got out my sewing machine (eek!) to finish off the lovely Granny Square Crochet / Fabric Dress by Mon Petit Violon for Little G for our holiday and to complete a crochet / fabric hybrid Frozen inspired cape for a lovely customers little girl. I’ll share a photo of Little G in the dress another time but this is the finished off cape.  I really wanted a cape that went over the shoulders rather than around the neck and was pleased with how it finally turned out.  There is no pattern for the cape, it’s just made up with inspiration from various other patterns.  The pattern for the little snowflakes however is this one Teeny tiny snowflake by Elizabeth Dodd.

01+Logo

Using a sewing machine is something I DEFINITELY need more practice at; but I know I want to make another crochet / fabric dress for Little G, it’s so satisfying to see her in a full item of clothing that I’ve made for her – I even made a little bow for her hair out of the same fabric.

I’ve been busy hooking up some more Star Wars characters by the fab Lucy Collins (which I blogged about here). I’ve hooked up another Yoda and a Stormtrooper but I’m seriously in LOVE with how Chewie turned out – I have learnt of a new way to make him a bit fuzzier which I’m going to have to try with a future one I’ve got to make for a lovely customer.

01+Logo

I have also been hooking up Block 12 and Block 13 this month for the CAL and as always I have really enjoyed seeing the different blocks you have all been hooking up at home! Here are some collages of the wonderful squares everyone has been hooking up! I love how just a simple twist of colour can make the same square look so unique! Everyone’s end blanket is just going to be fabulous!

No9We also enjoyed our holiday in Brittany, France in June, but I’ve lots of photos I want to share so I think that will need to be a post on its own!

Sadly at the end of June we had a family bereavement which has been very hard on my little family. My most wonderful Mother-in-Law lost her fight to cancer and she will be missed dreadfully by us all. In February last year I designed the Margaret’s Hug Healing Shawl / Prayer Shawl for her which is a free pattern. So far it’s been downloaded almost 20 thousand times.  I’m sharing it here again so others can see it and perhaps make a hug for someone who needs one. And if you would like to pass on the couple of pounds/dollars you would have paid for this pattern to Cancer Research then that would make you even more awesome!

Click on the following links to access the pattern here on the blog, add to your queue on Ravelry, here on Craftsy and there is now a video of the first few rows of the pattern available on my Youtube Channel.

Crochet Book Reviews | Star Wars Crochet by Lucy Collin

Disclaimer: This book / pattern is one I have purchased (or used) for my own benefit.  I have not been financially compensated by the book company or the designer to write this review. All opinions expressed are my own and based on my own experiences of using the book / pattern.

Shopping for crochet books?  I do so love a good crochet book and certainly have LOADS on my shelves so I thought I would share my recommendations for crochet lovers out there.

I decided that my first review would be about the new crochet book / kit that arrived for me to play with on Bank Holiday weekend (well actually I brought more than one but that’s another story).

Last year I wanted to make a couple of Darth Vader‘s for my nephews for Christmas, I’d had a pattern, by the extremely talented British Crochet Designer Lucy Ravenscar (aka. Lucy Collin), saved for awhile on Ravelry but then when I came to buy it there was a message on the pattern to say that it was no longer available for sale!  In Yoda-speak ‘devastated was I’ but all was well as Lucy was just putting all her awesome Star Wars amigurumi’s together into a book.  So stalking her (in a nice way) I have been waiting for the book to be published since last year and now it’s HERE! If you LOVE Star Wars then this is definitely the book you are looking for! It’s AMAZING! Seriously! And the author’s passion for designing these Star Wars character’s definitely shines through.

Lets start off with the kit first, well the price you pay for the kit and book is worth it for the book alone so don’t let my next paragraph put you off…

Unfortunately I found the kit itself not as good as perhaps it could have been though the idea for the kit and contents are a brilliant concept. In the kit you get yarn enough to make an amigurumi Yoda and a Stormtrooper. You get 2 pairs of safety eyes, a metal yarn needle, a basic aluminium 3.5mm (US E/4) hook and I was rather impressed that the kit also contained some stuffing – so literally everything you might need aside from some stitch markers and pins (which aren’t included).  However I found yarn was a bit on the thin side for me (think a light DK / sport weight #2 or #3) and I found that it split easily. The safety eyes were just AWFUL; both me and my husband struggled with trying to put them on as the washers were an odd shape and seemed too small. The hook was servicable and the needle / stuffing both fine, but I have spoilt myself using Clover Amour hooks so in the end I gave in and used my own stash and accessories and then I had no issues.

In the end I chose some yarn from my stash; Stylecraft Special Aran (Worsted weight #4) Meadow, Dark Brown and Camel for Master Yoda with a 4mm hook (US G) and some 9mm eyes.  This made my Yoda about 5 inches / 12.5 cm high.

The book includes instructions for 12 Star Wars figures: Yoda, Stormtrooper, C-3PO, Princess Leia, Wicket the Ewok, Luke Skywalker, R2-D2, Han Solo, Chewbacca, Darth Vader, Boba Fett, and Jabba the Hutt.

I wouldn’t say that the book is geared for a beginner crocheter though it does contain some basic how-to-guidance at the front of the book.  It’s perfect for someone who has been crocheting for awhile that already has a gist of crochet stitches and techniques.

The book is written in US Crochet Terminology (though there is a conversion guide supplied in the front of the book) and as a whole the book is well illustrated throughout with photographs not only from the pattern but from the film (which is a nice touch) and each pattern has clear instructions.

As you can see my Yoda turned out AWESOMELY and I can’t wait to make some of the other characters. My recommendation? The force is strong with this one! Buy this book! You won’t regret it!

Doodle Zoo – No. 4: Ezra the Elephant (Free Pattern)

For all the elephant fans let me introduce Ezra!  I can’t take credit for the fabulous name which came from my fabulous 11 year old nephew (thanks again Master T!).

01+Logo

Ezra is a great little stash buster using only 30g / 90 yards of blue yarn and some scraps of pink.  All the Doodle Zoo animals are designed to work up in less than an hour and because they are just the right hand size they become very steal-able so be prepared to make a few!  Ezra the Elephant would make a cute additional gift for family and friends or an quick addition to a craft stall.

This is an easy pattern suitable for beginners looking to learn some new crochet techniques. Click here to add this pattern to your favourites / queue on Ravelry or click here to access on Craftsy or scroll down for the pattern.

For details about the other Doodle Zoo characters; see my posts about Doodle Duck, Rowan Rabbit and Finlay Frog.

Don’t forget to look out for the next addition to the Doodle Zoo next month!

Pattern Test – Sakura Kokeshi Doll by Knotted Notions

You know me, I do love to test for other people as I am always so grateful that people take time out of their busy lives to test for me!  My patterns would not exist if it wasn’t thanks to the many very talented ladies over the years that have helped worked through my scribbles.

However it’s been a while since I had any free time to test a pattern for someone but when I saw a call out for testers for this little Sakura Kokeshi Doll by Knotted Notions I fell in love so I offered to test it for her.

I love the fact that the Kokeshi doll represents good fortune and who doesn’t need a bit of that in their lives!

At the same time I decided to do the test the orchid in my bathroom came into flower and so already in a Japanese frame of mind and inspired by how beautiful it was I decided to pick up similar yarn shades for my doll.  My little Kokeshi doll stands at just over 8 inches high and is super cute; I love how she has turned out!

The Sakura Kokeshi Doll pattern is written in American Crochet Terminology and is now available in Amber’s Ravelry store for about £1.99 ($3.00 USD): http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/sakura-kokeshi-doll
