Meet Argyll the Reindeer โ€” A Festive Crochet Delight from Simply Crochet Issue 168

Hey lovelies, hope you are all well. Bit of advance warning, I’m going to be mentioning the ‘C’ word in this post. I know, I know – but itโ€™s the beginning of November (already!), and us crocheters need a bit of prep time, am I right? So without further ado I’m delighted to share with you today a new pattern featured in Simply Crochet issue 168. Allow me to introduce Argyll the Reindeer – a charming little character whoโ€™s bound to bring some handmade holiday cheer to your hook this season.

A handmade grey crocheted reindeer named Argyll, wearing a colourful plaid tartan scarf, posed on a decorative table against a textured wall.

Argyll is more than just a Christmas ornament; heโ€™s a handmade friend who gives your home that warm, cosy holiday spirit. With his antlers, sweet face, and stout little body, heโ€™s ideal as a hearth decoration or a whimsical gift for someone who adores handmade touches.

Sometimes a tiny decoration just wonโ€™t do am I right? You want something that really makes a statement. Standing proudly at around 36cm (14in) tall, Argyll is the reindeer for the job!

A hand-crocheted grey reindeer named Argyll, wearing a green, purple and pink tartan scarf, is standing next to a wicker basket in front of a fireplace.

Argyll is a lovely easy make for adventurous beginners – the pattern uses simple stitches and clear shaping, so you can build confidence as you go. The only slightly fiddly part is his little scarf, but donโ€™t let that put you off! Once you get your hook moving, it quickly comes together and adds such a charming finishing touch to his look. Before you know it, youโ€™ll have a reindeer thatโ€™s ready to dash straight into your festive dรฉcor.

Crochet Now 125 | Three Spooky Projects

Get ready for a hook-full of fun! Inside issue 125 of Crochet Now magazine, youโ€™ll find not one, not two, but three of my latest designs to keep your crochet hooks busy this Autumn.

Pin for later:

A collage featuring three whimsical crocheted characters: a bear wearing a witch's hat, a purple creature with a flower design, and a black cat dressed in a ghost costume holding a pumpkin. The background showcases a spooky graveyard setting.
ยฉย 2025 Practical Publishing โ€“ Crochet Now Issue 125

Scaring is caring! ๐ŸŽƒโœจ On the run up to spooky season what better way to celebrate than with two new Carebear keyring patterns to add a little cuteness (and maybe a tiny scare!) to your makes? I’ve mentioned before how I love Carebears, and I always jump at the opportunity to create them in crochet.

These keyrings are perfect for hooking up quickly – think last-minute Halloween gifts, treats for trick-or-treaters, or just a way to add a little seasonal cheer to your own bag or keys. Whether you love the bold and bright colours of the Carebears or prefer something a little moodier for October, you can customise them to fit your spooky style.

Two crocheted Care Bear keyrings, one purple and one orange, in front of a Halloween-themed background featuring a pumpkin and scattered confetti.
ยฉย 2025 Practical Publishing โ€“ Crochet Now Issue 125

For both of my Carebears I used Crochet Society Confection DK (Light worsted weight #3) which is anti-pilling 100% acrylic yarn that comes in 100g balls [210m] in a range of colours. I paired the Crochet Society Confection DK with a 3.25mm crochet hook (US D/3), then the only other things you would need for to complete your project are:

๐ŸŽƒ SAVE HALLOWEEN CAREBEARS ON RAVELRY ๐ŸŽƒ

But thatโ€™s not all โ€“ in issue 125 you can also find the Spooktail the Cat who is ready for his favourite night of the year! ๐Ÿˆโ€โฌ›โœจ Spooktail is all dressed up and ready to show off his brand-new Halloween costume to all his friends. Heโ€™s mischievous, magical, and just a little bit spooky – everything you need for a purrfect seasonal project. And the best bit? Spooktailโ€™s ghost costume actually GLOWS in the dark!

A crocheted cat doll wearing a pumpkin-themed sweater and holding a small pumpkin bag, posed on grass with Halloween-themed decorations in the background.
ยฉย 2025 Practical Publishing โ€“ Crochet Now Issue 125

For Spooktail I used Yarnsmiths Pebble Haze DK (Light worsted weight #3) which is a 67%ย Cotton, 33%ย Acrylic blended yarn that comes in 50g [145m] balls. Pebble Haze DK is a soft and beautiful yarn, in a range of shades inspired by nature’s beaches, pebbles and stones, I really like the effect it produces and can see me using it again in future projects.

Then I used Yarnsmiths Glow which is magic yarn that works by absorbing UV light energy (from either natural sunlight or artificial light) and slowly releasing it in the form of visible light. This photoluminescence means that the longer you expose the yarn to light, the longer it will glow for. Science aside it is such a fun yarn! It’s classed as an Aran (Worsted Weight #4) and is made from 100%ย Polyester.

A crocheted black cat dressed in a white ghost costume holds a pumpkin candy bucket, standing on grassy ground with gravestones in the background, set against a purple sky.
ยฉย 2025 Practical Publishing โ€“ Crochet Now Issue 125

I paired the yarns with a 3.5mm crochet hook (US E/4), then the only other things you would need for to complete your project are:

So grab your favourite yarn, a cosy blanket, and maybe a pumpkin-spiced treat or two – itโ€™s time to crochet your way through to spooky season with Issue 125!

For Ghoulie I used some Yarnsmiths Create Super Chunky, which was a new yarn to me. Itโ€™s a very squishy super chunky weight yarn thatโ€™s made from 100% Acrylic in 100g (80m) balls which helps make Ghoulie โ€˜hauntinglyโ€™ cute and โ€˜boo-tifullyโ€™ soft!

Standing at 70cm /27.5 inches tall the only other things you will need for Ghoulie are;

Crochet Now 124 | Redfern the Squirrel

Let me introduce you to Redfern the Squirrel, whoโ€™s scampered his way into Crochet Now Issue 124! With his fluffy tail and matching little acorn, heโ€™s the perfect woodland friend to add to your crochet collection.

Pin for later:

A colorful crochet squirrel character named Redfern, wearing a yellow sweater and blue pants, is posed with a raised hand against a green background, with leaves and acorns scattered around.
ยฉย 2025 Practical Publishing โ€“ Crochet Now Issue 124

Redfern the Squirrel is a charming woodland wanderer, always busy gathering treasures from
the forest floor. With his bushy tail and keen eyes, he clutches a prized acorn. His gentle nature makes him a true guardian of the woodland.

For Redfern, I chose to use West Yorkshire Spinners ColourLab DK (Light Worsted). Thereโ€™s just something about this yarn that gives amigurumi a beautiful โ€˜heritageโ€™ feel โ€“ almost like a nod to the kind of classic toys youโ€™d find treasured in a keepsake box.

Five skeins of West Yorkshire Spinners ColourLab DK yarn in various colours including red, yellow, brown, and blue, arranged on a wooden surface.

๐ŸŒฐ SAVE REDFERN THE SQUIRREL ON RAVELRY ๐ŸŒฐ

Made from 100% British wool, ColourLab DK is both vibrant and durable, with that lovely balance of softness and sturdiness that makes it perfect for toy-making. Each 100g ball gives you 225m of woolly goodness, and I paired it with a 3.5mm hook (closest US size E/4) to bring Redfern to life. The natural stitch definition really helps his character shine, especially with those charming little details like his tufted ears and his acorn companion.

To complete your Redfern, youโ€™ll only need a few extra supplies:

Crocheted character of Redfern the Squirrel, featuring a bright red body, bushy tail, yellow sweater, and blue pants, standing among green leaves with a small crocheted acorn beside him.

If you love woodland-inspired makes, Redfern will be a joy to crochet โ€“ he works up beautifully and would make a thoughtful gift for children and nature-lovers alike.

Simply Crochet Magazine | Granny Square Day 2025

Colorful graphic announcing Granny Square Day on August 15, 2025, featuring playful typography and a logo for the Melon Foundation.

Hello, crochet friends!
Granny Square Day 2025 is here, and itโ€™s time to celebrate creativity, colour, and community! Whether youโ€™ve been hooking for years or just picked up your very first skein, this special day is all about honouring the timeless granny square a design that has inspired makers across generations.

Granny Square Day started back in 2014, and itโ€™s been growing ever since. The idea was simple: fill the Instagram grid with beautiful granny squares, creating a patchwork of inspiration that anyone could be part of. Each square posted on this day becomes part of a larger tapestry, symbolising our shared love for crochet.

ยฉ Simply Crochet 2025 – Issue 165

As previous years Simply Crochet the latest issue of the magazine (Issue 165) comes with a special supplement to get your hooks sunk into. This year’s is titled ‘A Year of Granny Squares’ with 52 brand new designs there’s loads of inspiration for some new fabulously square projects.

And I’m really excited to say that I designed a new granny square for this supplement. The theme for this yearโ€™s Granny Square day is โ€˜Colour and Textureโ€™ and that’s what I focused on for my design, the Mandala Medallion Square.

Two colourful granny squares featuring circular patterns, accompanied by three balls of Rico Ricorumi yarn in grey, yellow, and green, resting on an open magazine showcasing crochet patterns.

I used Rico Ricorumi for my block, with a 3.5mm hook (US E/4) which is a DK (Light Worsted) weight 100% cotton yarn that I had in my stash, but the designs would work equally well in any DK yarn or in fact with other fibres and yarn weights to make bigger or smaller blocks.

โค๏ธ SAVE MANDALA MEDALLION SQUARE ON RAVELRY โค๏ธ

I love a granny square – not just for its stitches, but for everything it represents. Itโ€™s more than a crochet motif; itโ€™s a little square of creativity! Super versatile, to take out and about with you, and often very beginner-friendly. And a granny square can become anything! Think blankets, bags, garments, coasters, cardigans – I might just be working on a granny square cardigan myself at the moment. And the best part? Theyโ€™re the ultimate stash-buster, turning leftover yarn into something truly beautiful.

An assortment of crochet items including a colourful granny square, yarn skeins, and two crochet magazines titled 'Simply Crochet' and 'A Year of Granny Squares' featuring various crochet designs.

Simply Crochet Magazine is on sale from 5th August 2025 and is available to order online or download as a digital issue now. As well as all the Granny Square goodness the magazine is fun of bold and bright cool makes for hot days.

A Sweet Surprise in Crochet Now Issue 123! ๐Ÿญ๐Ÿง

If youโ€™ve got a sweet tooth for crochet, then youโ€™re in for a real treat with Crochet Now Issue 123 โ€“ because itโ€™s positively packed with sugary goodness!

I already knew that my brand-new pattern, the MarshFellows โ€“ Coco and Puff, would be hopping into this issue (arenโ€™t they just the squishiest little marshmallow pals?), but imagine my delight when I flicked through the pages and spotted some familiar favourites making a surprise return!

Two crochet plush marshmallow characters, one with a pink exterior and one with a white exterior, both featuring brown tops and smiling faces, surrounded by mini marshmallows on a fluffy white surface with a pink background.
ยฉ 2025 Practical Publishing – Crochet Now Issue 123

But first let me tell you all about Cocoa and Puff, the Marshfellow Pals – two delightfully squishy, chocolate-dipped marshmallow friends! Made with plush chenille yarn for maximum cuddliness,
these sweet amigurumi treats are the perfect blend of cosy and cute.

For the Marshfellows, I used Yarnsmiths Chenille Chunky, which, as you can probably imagine, is wonderfully soft and snuggly, perfect for these huggable characters. Since theyโ€™re quite large, youโ€™ll need a fair amount of stuffing to give them their full, squishy shape. I also recommend using a large stitch marker when working with this fluffy yarn, as the stitches can be tricky to see. To finish them off, youโ€™ll need a pair of 21mm black safety eyes and a bit of black thread for the finer facial details.

๐Ÿ”ฅ SAVE THE MARSHFELLOWS ON RAVELRY ๐Ÿ”ฅ

โœจ The Coffee House Kawaii Toys are back โ€“ one of my older designs thatโ€™s still as delicious as ever! Youโ€™ll find the super cute donut, a smiley coffee cup, and the sweetest little ice cream. These three make such a cheerful trio and are perfect for adding a dash of kawaii charm to your day.

A vibrant display of crocheted kawaii food items, including a smiling pink donut, a cheerful green cup with a pink band, and a playful ice cream cone topped with chocolate and pink scoops, all set against a light blue background.
ยฉ 2025 Practical Publishing – Crochet Now Issue 123

For these characters, I used Paintbox Cotton DK, a soft and versatile 100% cotton yarn. Itโ€™s a DK (double knitting) weight and comes in generous 50g (125m) balls – plenty for amigurumi projects. I used one ball each of Light Caramel (409), Bubblegum Pink (451), Spearmint Green (426), Paper White (401), and the perfectly named Coffee Bean (411) to create all the characters – and I still had some yarn left over!

Although the recommended hook size for this yarn is 4mm, I opted for a 3mm hook. I often go down a couple of sizes when making amigurumi to achieve a tighter stitch, which helps keep the stuffing neatly contained.

And if that wasnโ€™t enough to satisfy your crafty cravings, Bella the Bon Bon Mouse also makes an appearance! Originally featured in Your Crochet & Knitting magazine (Issue 54), Bella is a tiny bundle of confectionery-inspired cuteness โ€“ with her candy-coloured dress and dainty bow, sheโ€™s as sweet as sugar.

But wait โ€“ thereโ€™s more!

A collection of crochet amigurumi characters inspired by 'Alice in Wonderland', including a pink Cheshire Cat, a white rabbit, Alice, and the Mad Hatter, displayed on a floral tablecloth with a cup of coffee and pastries.

This month, the magazine also includes a special themed supplement called Crochet in Wonderland โ€“ and it just so happens to be bursting with even more of my previous makes – The Wonderland Gang! Youโ€™ll step through the looking glass and find:

๐ŸŒ€ Alice, with her iconic pinafore and golden locks
๐Ÿ˜ธ The mischievous Cheshire Cat
๐ŸŽฉ A wildly wonderful Mad Hatter
๐Ÿ‡ And my personal favourite โ€“ the ever-dashing White Rabbit, waistcoat and all!

Crocheted white rabbit character dressed in blue pants and a yellow vest, holding a pocket watch, set against a backdrop of playing cards.

For Alice and friends I used some of my favourite Ricorumi DK yarn with a 3.25mm hook which, if you’re not familiar with it, comes in the cutest 25g balls which is perfect for making little multicoloured amigurumi characters like these.

Triple the Fun in Crochet Now Issue 122

Iโ€™m so excited to share with you that I have three brand new designs featured in the latest issue of Crochet Now โ€“ Issue 122! ๐ŸŽ‰ Itโ€™s always such a joy to be included in this magazine, and this monthโ€™s issue is such fun because it includes lots of fab designs including a sweet toy, a stylish accessory, and a nostalgic dose of childhood magic by meโ€ฆ all wrapped up in one publication!

So letโ€™s dive in and take a closer look at whatโ€™s insideโ€ฆ

A playful panda plush named Scoops holding an ice cream cone, alongside a whimsical white cat with a top hat, and a model wearing a stylish yellow-striped crochet top, against colorful backgrounds.

๐Ÿผ Meet Scoops the Panda

First up is Scoops the Panda โ€“ the cutest little bear with a big love of ice cream! Inspired by sunny days and sweet treats, Scoops is a playful amigurumi panda with a summery twist. Heโ€™s holding his very own crochet cone, complete with a colourful scoop thatโ€™s perfect for imaginative play or gifting. Made in 4ply yarn, heโ€™s the ideal project for toy lovers or anyone looking for a whimsical amigurumi to brighten their day.

Scoops is a fun make that works up quickly and brings a smile to your face โ€“ and with those adorable eyes and cheeky grin, who could resist him?

I chose Scheepjes Catona for Scoops with aย 3mm hookย (closest US size C/2). If you are not not familiar with the yarn it is 100% mercerised cotton which comes in either 10g [25m], 50g [125m] or 100g [250m] balls. The only other things you would need for Scoops is:

โค๏ธ Crochet with the Moomins!

Also something for the Moomin fans out there โ€“ I was thrilled to be invited to contribute some more patterns to the official Moomins pattern collection! The Moomins have been a beloved part of many childhoods, and now you can crochet your very own additional magical characters from Moominvalley. Whether youโ€™re a long-time Moomin lover or just discovering the charm of Tove Janssonโ€™s world, this project is a real treat.

I usedย DROPS Alpacaย for my Moomins as I felt it would be fitting to use a Nordic yarn and the new Moomin characters needed to fit in with the Moomins I have made before. DROPS Alpaca is a 5ply / Sport weight yarn thatโ€™s made from 100% Alpaca Wool that comes in 50g (167mm) balls. Itโ€™s beautifully soft to work with and has a lovely halo on it, which I think, lends a nice โ€˜cuddle factorโ€™ to the Moomins. The only other things you would need for the Moomin pair are:

๐Ÿงฃ Sunshade Scallops Shawlette

And finally, something for the accessory lovers โ€“ the Sunshade Scallops Shawlette. This lightweight crocheted stripy shawlette is perfect for summer evenings or when you want to add a delicate handmade touch to your outfit. Featuring an elegant scalloped edge and a simple yet effective stitch pattern, itโ€™s an ideal project for advanced beginners or anyone wanting to try something a little different.

Crocheted in Cascade Heritage (75% Merino Wool 25% Nylon, 400m (437yds)/100g) with a 3.5mm hookย (closest US size E/4), the shawlette has beautiful drape and can be worn in a variety of ways โ€“ around the shoulders, as a neck scarf, or even as a head wrap. Cascade Heritage is a beautifully soft and smooth 4ply yarn with excellent drape, making it perfect for delicate accessories, and it comes in a gorgeous range of vibrant and classic colours to suit any project.

Bright Burst Baskets โ€“ Issue 163 Simplyโ€ฏCrochet

In issueโ€ฏ163 of Simply Crochet Iโ€™m delighted to share my Bright Burst Baskets โ€” a duo of cheerful, sturdy baskets. Letโ€™s talk about crochet storage for a moment. Thereโ€™s something incredibly satisfying about making something thatโ€™s both beautiful and useful โ€” and thatโ€™s exactly what these Bright Burst Baskets are all about.

Pin for later:

A pair of colourful, crocheted baskets with leather handles on a white step stool, surrounded by a plant and various items.
ยฉ Our Media Ltd 2025 – Issue 163

Theyโ€™re a great medium sized basket; Iโ€™ve got one in the bathroom keeping toiletries together, and a another by my crochet corner holding my current WIPs and a few stray balls of yarn. Honestly, once you start using crochet baskets, youโ€™ll want one in every room – they just make keeping things tidy feel a little bit nicer.

But beyond practicality, thereโ€™s the joy of making something lovely that brightens a room. Handmade storage adds that pop of colour, that soft texture you just donโ€™t get with plastic tubs or baskets from the high street. Whether you go for soft pastels or rainbow brights, theyโ€™re an easy way to lift a shelf, desk, or bedside table.

ยฉ Our Media Ltd 2025 – Issue 163

And hereโ€™s the bonus: they make brilliant gifts. Pop a little candle, hand cream, or some cosy socks inside one of these baskets, and youโ€™ve got yourself a ready-made present that feels both thoughtful and functional. Itโ€™s like wrapping a gift in a gift โ€” and who doesnโ€™t love that?

What you need for the pattern

I used Cygnet Cotton DK 100% natural cotton [100g / 200m] which is available in a wide palette of bright rainbow and pastel shades, perfect for mixing and matching multiple colours in one project. I opted for seven contrasting colours per basket but you could use as little as two or three. The pattern is very adaptable though you could pair colours creatively think ombre fades, sunburst contrasts, or bold block stripes, I think they could all look fantastic.

This DK cotton delivers sturdy stitch definition and just the right structure for home accessories like baskets, then the only other things you need for Bright Burst Baskets are:

So if youโ€™ve been thinking about trying your hand at crochet storage, this is your sign. Bright, bold, and built to be used, these baskets are a total win.
