Crochet Now | Peaches the Pet Rabbit Pattern

Are you ready to crochet yourself a new pet? Look no further than the adorable Peaches the Pet Rabbit pattern, featured in Crochet Now issue 108! This charming project is bound to capture your heart and ignite your creativity as you craft your very own sweet companion.

Peaches the Pet Rabbit is the epitome of crochet cuteness. With her upright ears, powder puff tail, and lovable expression, she’s sure to become a cherished member of your crochet menagerie.

I love making bunnies, in fact I think this might possibly be my 11th incarnation of crocheting a rabbit, they are definitely the animal I have crocheted the most.

I used some of my favourite Scheepjes Stone Washed for Peaches, which, if you’re not familiar with it, is a Sport weight yarn that’s made from 22% Acrylic, 78% Cotton that comes in 50g (130m) balls.

The only other things you will need for Peaches are some stitch markers, a tapestry needle, some toy stuffing, 1 pair x 12mm kawaii safety eyes, 1 x 15mm pink flocked safety nose, some black embroidery thread, two small green buttons and a 3.5mm hook (US size E).

Crochet Now Magazine | Official Moomins Pattern

In the enchanting world of crochet, where imagination weaves into reality, there’s a special corner reserved, for folks like me, who cherish nostalgic memories. Enter the beloved Moomins, those delightful characters from Tove Jansson’s iconic stories which I have recently had the pleasure to create in crochet.

If you are not familiar with the Moomins they are a family of white roundish trolls with large snouts. They are the central characters in a series of novels, short stories, picture books, and a comic strip by Finnish writer and illustrator Tove Jansson,

The latest issue of Crochet Now magazine is a treasure trove of lovely seasonal patterns and inspiration, but nestled among them are two little guys that I hope will instantly transport you to Moominvalley. I had fun creating the much-loved hippopotamus-like characters; Moomin Troll and the Snork Maiden.

I used DROPS Alpaca for my Moomins as I felt it would be fitting to use a Nordic yarn. DROPS Alpaca is a 5ply / Sport weight yarn that’s made from 100% Alpaca Wool that comes in 50g (167mm) balls. It’s beautifully soft to work with and has a lovely halo on it, which I think, lent a nice ‘cuddle factor’ to the Moomins.

The only other things you will need for the Moomins are some stitch markers, a tapestry needle, some toy stuffing, black sewing thread, 4 x 6mm black safety eyes and a 3mm hook (closest US size D/3).

Simply Crochet Magazine | Zuri the Zebra

One of this years trending style is Neon! Have you considered giving it a try to bring an electrified pop to your next amigurumi project?

As well as the Bear Pocket organiser (that I talked about here) I also have another pattern in issue 148 of Simply Crochet Magazine. Allow me to introduce Zuri the Zebra, a jumbo colourful amigurumi project.

Neon colours have been making a splash in the world of fashion and design, and now they’re taking the crochet world by storm. With their bold, vivid hues, neon yarns add an instant dose of excitement and energy to any project. And what better way to showcase this trend than with a larger-than-life crochet creation like Zuri the Zebra!

Zuri is not your average amigurumi! Standing tall and proud, at 50cm (20 inches) tall when sitting, this neon giant zebra is sure to make a statement in any room. With her striking neon stripes, she exudes a playful charm that’s impossible to resist.

Whether you’re an experienced crocheter looking for a new challenge or a beginner eager to try something bold, Zuri is the perfect project to unleash your creativity.

To create Zuri I used two types of Aran weight yarn for this jumbo project. The main bod colour was made from Scheepjes Truly Scrumptious Aran in Buttercream Icing, which is and 50% Polyester 50% Acrylic blended yarn available in 100g (108m) balls. It was my first time using this yarn and I was curious about it as the polyester part is made from recycled plastic bottles. I have to say I was impressed, it’s still fairly soft and there is over 80 shades to choose from, I’ll certainly be considering it for other projects.

For the bright neon accents I used Scheepjes Chunky Monkey in Hot Pink, Neon Green, Yellow and Smoke (for the hooves). I’ve used Chunky Monkey in lots of projects in the past, it’s a really versatile 100% acrylic yarn Aran weight yarn 100g (116m) balls.

Then the only other things you will need are a 5.5 (US size H/8), a pair of 24mm black safety eyes, some stitch markers, some toy filler (at least 1kg / 2lbs), pins and a yarn needle to sew all the pieces together. And if you are looking for a large project bag to keep all that I can certainly recommend my Dear Ewe Large Project or Tote bags that hold 8 or more balls of yarn comfortably.

Moorit Magazine | Equilibrium Wrap

Welcome to the enchanting world of crochet where balance and beauty converge in the exquisite latest issue of Moorit magazine pattern! Working within this issues theme of ‘balance’ I came up with the Equilibrium wrap; a unique exploration of negative and positive space.

About Moorit

I am delighted to feature in Moorit magazine for the first time! If you haven’t heard of Moorit before it’s an independent crochet magazine based in Scotland and run by Alyson Chu. Launched in 2021, Moorit is a high-end craft magazine with true indie spirit. It focuses on wearable, modern garments and accessories, made in natural fibres, and is akin to a stunning coffee table book with its beautiful photos and captivating content.

My design

At the heart of the Equilibrium pattern lies a delicate dance between stitches and space. I wanted the wrap to showcase a state of balance, between opposing sections of filet crochet, in an interesting and appealing design. It’s a little lacy without being too complicated but with enough coverage to ward of a cool breeze. Made in a single colour this elegant and classic easy-to-wear wrap is sure to become a wardrobe staple.

If you’ve been around for awhile you’ll know that I love a bit of filet crochet and I think the play of solid and open spaces, adds an extra layer of depth and dimension to the Equilibrium pattern. The contrast between solid and open mesh creates a mesmerizing interplay of light and shadow, enhancing the overall elegance of the design. Each stitch is carefully placed to create a harmonious balance between negative space, where stitches recede, and positive space, where stitches stand out – that’s the beauty of filet crochet!

The Yarn

I used Wool Decanted DK which is 100% British Wool (Polwarth / Romney & Black Shetland sheep) that comes in 50g balls (112m / 122yd per). The sample I made mine in was in colourway ‘River Thyme 001’, though it would be easy to personalise using your favourite colour.

Final note

I hope that as you work through the Equilibrium pattern, you’ll find yourself immersed in the filet crochet technique. With each new row, you’ll witness the intricate design come to life, revealing the delicate balance between solid and open spaces.

While Equilibrium may present a challenge, as it does need a bit of concentration, I would say that the pattern is suitable for an an advanced beginner wanting to expand their crochet skills. Whether you choose to wear it as a wrap, shawl, or scarf, the finished project will effortlessly add a touch of elegance to any outfit.

Crochet Now Magazine | Official Paddington Bear

Hello! How are you all? Although it’s still cold here in the U.K we have been enjoying a couple of days of sunshine recently which has been blissful – definitely making me feel that Spring is on the way! And Spring has definitely sprung in the most recent issue of Crochet Now magazine…

It’s chock full of loads of lovely seasonal patterns – and a brand new exclusive character design from me. It’s Paddington Bear! You might just be able to spy him on the front cover.

Paddington is a special bear to me; my nursery when my mum and dad brought home from hospital was Paddington Bear everything from wallpaper to bedding. And when I was a little girl some of my favourite bed-time stories were about the polite bear from Peru with a love of marmalade sandwiches.

As Paddington is so quintisentially British I felt it would be nice to create Paddington from British wool. Luckily the magazine agreed and we settled on West Yorkshire Spinners (WYS) which is spun in Yorkshire.

I used WYS Elements as the main ‘Paddington’ colour, it’s a DK weight yarn that’s made from 60% Lyocell, 40% Falkland Islands Wool and comes in 50g (122m) balls. Then for all of Paddington’s accessories I used WYS Bo Peep Luxury Baby DK which is 52% Falkland Wool, 48% Nylon also in 50g (112m) balls.

The only other things you will need for Paddington are some stitch markers, a tapestry needle, some toy stuffing, 2 x 8mm black safety eyes, 1 x 15mm black safety bear nose, 2 x 15mm brown wooden toggle buttons, 3 x small press studs and a 3.5mm hook (US size E).

Your Crochet & Knitting 40 | Crochet Tea Set

Hey lovelies, I’ve got a charming new design to share with you today that you can find inside the latest issue of Your Crochet & Knitting magazine. They’ve put together a Easter Special which is chock full of lovely seasonal projects to get your hooks into.

For this issue I’ve created a cute crocheted tea set; complete with a quaint tea pot, two happy cups and saucers, spoons and a smiley sugar bowl. Perfect for pretend tea parties and picnics, or it could also be a great feature decoration for afternoon tea.

When I was little, I loved having tea parties with my teddies, and I know my children adored bringing me endless plates of pretend food and drink from their kitchen’s when they were small. This set is durable for hours of enjoyment and very child friendly as it’s non-breakable!

For this design I used all six balls of DK yarn and the 3.5mm (US size E/4) hook that comes with the magazine (so you can get started straight away!). It’s a relatively easy project – making it a great project for adventurous beginner crocheters. So pull out your hook and whip up this cute little crockery playset before tea time!

Simply Crochet Magazine 145 | Cubist Wall Hanging

Hey lovelies, I’ve got a new design to share with you today that you can find inside the latest issue of Simply Crochet magazine. Splash your walls with a new sense of style with the ‘About Face’ Cubist Wall Hanging.

Inspired by the Cubist movement, characterised by the breaking down of forms into geometric shapes, this modern abstract wall art will definitely provide an interesting talking point in your home.

I created the wall hanging from West Yorkshire Spinners Colour Lab DK (light worsted), It’s made from 100% British wool and comes in a range of bright solids and self-striping shades.

I used 1 ball each of the following colours with a 3.5mm hook (US E/4);

Natural Cream (0010)
Citrus Yellow (0229)
Crimson Red (0556)
Zesty Orange (0476)
Electric Blue (0364)
Bottle Green (0363)
Phantom Black (0099)

However the colours are easily adaptable so the wall hanging could be made to suit every taste of décor, and it could also be a great stash buster. If you are really a bit unsure about selecting colour combinations for your wall hanging then I can certainly recommend the Design Seeds website for inspiration for beautiful colour palettes.

The only other thing you will need for this project are some a yarn needle, and two 30cm wooden dowel or sticks, and maybe a a project bag to store everything in. It’s the perfect way to add your own striking creative masterpiece to your bare walls – or wherever you want to add a pop of colour!

I’d suggest it’s a relatively quick and easy project – making it a great project for beginner crocheters. I’ve been thinking I should add a post on the blog on how to do surface crochet (which is how I did the ‘face’ on the wall hanging), but there is a note about the technique included in the magazine if you’ve not tried that method before.

Simply Crochet Magazine | Block Buddies

Hey lovelies, welcome to a little blog post about a trio of designs I have in the latest issue of Simply Crochet magazine (issue 144). It was a nice surprise to spy them on the front cover … yay! 😃

Lions and tigers and bears, oh my! I’ve designed three cuddly friends which are ideal early toys for babies thanks to their their soft granny square bodies, simple construction and child-safe embroidered faces.

Meet Toulouse the Tiger, Lowry the Lion and Beal the Bear. These little guys are built on a central solid ‘granny square’ motif making them perfect for beginners learning the art of crochet.

I created all of the animals from Scheepjes Colour Crafter, a yarn I’ve used many times before for different projects. Colour Crafter is a DK (light worsted) premium 100% acrylic yarn which is beautifully soft and has a nice smooth texture. It is also hypoallergenic which is great for crocheted toys.

There are so many colours to choose from, all named after towns through the Netherlands and Belgium. I used 1 ball each of Weert (1001), Gouda (1081), Burum (1709), Veenendaal (1064), Gent (2002), Rotterdam (1063) and Ede (1002) with a 3mm hook (closest US size D/3).

Do you love a one-ball project? Me too, I love how versatile they are – I’m a person that has different categories of crochet; I tend to do more involved designing when I’m at home, and I have everything I need around me, but then I love to have a project that I can take out and about with me on the go.

That’s were one-ball projects come in really handy, and this particular project came with me to play-parks, on the train and on long car journeys (where I was the passenger – I’m not an advocate of crocheting while driving!)

I created the Triple Ripple Wrap from a Scheepjes Whirl made from a beautifully soft cotton-acrylic blend (60% Cotton and 40% Acrylic). The delicious gradient yarn comes in lots of scrumptious colour ways and has a generous twist which is fab to crochet with.

The yarn comes in a 220g (1000m) cake and I used Jade JimJam (560). This particular colourway has the signature Scheepjes Whirl long colour changes which make the ‘jade’ teal tones blend together in a beautiful ombre from lighter to darker.

Scheepjes Whirl’s are a favourite of mine to create wraps as they are simultaneously lightweight, breathable and have a beautiful drape. The only other thing you will need for a 3.5mm (US size E/4) and a project bag to keep it in so you can grab and go!

I would definitely describe this pattern as a lovely mindful, relaxing pattern that is easy and beginner friendly. I think it has the perfect blend of stitches and texture to make it look fabulous and elegant, and it would look great styled over a jumper or dress.

Crochet Now Magazine | The Wrong Trousers

Did you know that it’s been 30 years since Wallace welcomed an infamous penguin to be a lodger in his home sparking all sorts of heists and mischief. And for the anniversary I was absolutely delighted to create an official pattern to commemorate ‘The Wrong Trousers’ for Crochet Now magazine.

Stars of the Aardman Animation TV and movies I’ve had a go at recreating Wallace in his Techno Trousers alongside that sneaky Feather’s McGraw. In the show helpless Wallace finds himself, quite literally, under Feathers’ control. The dastardly penguin adapts Wallace’s Techno Trousers for his latest diamond heist and with his controller he tries to get Wallace to carry out his dirty work.

I created both Wallace and Feathers out of some Ricorumi DK which is a firm favourite yarn of mine. Ricorumi DK is a 100% cotton yarn that comes in 25g balls [57.5m] in that’s available in 80 solid shades, it’s perfect for amigurumi especially when you only need a bit of a specific colour. I also used a small amount of Scheepjes Sweet Treat for Wallace’s string vest.

The only other things you will need for Wallace and Feathers are some stitch markers, a tapestry needle, some toy stuffing, some floral wire (for the top of the controller), a 3mm (Closest US size D/3) and a small 1.5mm crochet hook.

I would definitely describe this pattern as one for the adventurous, for me personally I think it’s been one of the most involved crochet patterns I’ve ever designed, but I was really pleased with how they turned out in the end. And it was such a delight to create a couple of characters that I’ve loved for years!
