Leafy Boughs Shawl | Fancy joining us for a CAL?

So you guys have heard me talk about the monthly online US Happily Hooked Magazine before right? Well I’m extremely excited to announce that I’ve been published in the latest issue AND my brand new shawl design has been chosen as the magazine’s crochet-along for March! Can you see the green shawl on the front cover, well I’m very proud to say that it’s mine – please allow me to introduce the ‘Leafy Boughs’ Shawl.

HHM-Cover-March-48-iPad

The Leafy Boughs shawl is a light and airy shawl which is a perfect accessory for your spring / summer wardrobe.

And through some leafy boughs that made a green screen above his head, he saw a bonnet, and a shawl, and fluttering ribands’

Inspired by a passage from the romantic novel, The Commissioner by G. P. R. James, this pattern is a breeze to hook, once you get used to the row repeats, and worked in pretty gradient spring greens you’ll just want to keep it for yourself!

The crochet-along starts today 1 March until 31 March with members of HHM all crocheting this design (squeek – it’s so exciting!!).

march2018cal1

I made mine with a trusty 3.25mm hook (US size D) in the most delicious Scheejpes Whirl (4ply) in the shade Pistachi Oh So Nice.

761 Pistachi Oh So Nice

It was my first time using a Scheejpes whirl and I have to say I’m in love and now NEED to try all the colourways. The shawl pattern however is not at all gauge critical, so really anything from 4ply (fingering) to aran (worsted weight) would be just perfect to use!

Pattern Release & Sale | Gnorman the Gnome

You may remember that at the end of last year I entered the Amigurumi.net fantasy character competition and whilst I didn’t win (though thank you to everyone that voted) I really enjoyed the design process of creating three little fantasy amigurumi characters.

Comp-Collage

AND I’m really pleased to say that Gnorman the Gnome, the first of these characters, is out of testing and ready to be released into the world!

04a

Gnorman is a sweet little fellow with a gentle disposition who lives in a simple hillside dwelling deep in the woods. His favourite pastime is tending to his beloved mushroom garden where he cultivates scarlet capped toadstools loved by his fairy folk friends 🍄.
07a

I couldn’t believe it when I was in town the other week and I came across some little tiny tools that were just perfect for Gnorman! And yes it’s completely normal to buy your amigurumi their own accessories…he needed a couple of spades and a rake…

Gnorman-01+Logo

There are a few characters on my bucket list of things I’d like to design and a gnome was one of them and I loved how Gnorman turned out!

And what about the other characters? Well I’m planning to work on getting Wheelan O’Wool the Leprechaun out to testers next – so watch this space!

Pattern Links 🎉

Gnorman the Gnome is now available and on sale on Ravelry (with coupon code: GNOME) until 16 February 2018 after that time the pattern will revert to full price. The pattern is also available on Lovecrochet.com.

Remember to share your Gnorman project’s to be in with a chance to win a free pattern if you are featured in my monthly newsletter.

Until next time; keep calm and crochet on my friends xx

You can read all about my visit last year to the Ally Pally here (it’s a bit of a long post so make a cuppa first) – but in a nutshell it was really, really fab and I thoroughly enjoyed myself. Unfortunately I’m not going to be able to make the show at Olympia London (sad times) so I’ll be living vicariously through everyone else that attends…and of course if there’s any beautiful hand-dyed yarn that you want to send my way…

Any hoo, if you want to go straight to the details on how to win tickets scroll to the bottom of this page, if you’ve got a few more minutes I just want to tell you about another couple of things that’s happening at the Spring show…

Campaign-for-Creativity-website-logo.jpgHave you heard about the campaign for creativity? It’s the aim to provide more and better opportunities at school for children to be creative and to think creatively, there’s a petition you can sign here, but the The Spring Knitting & Stitching Show are hosting a wall of embroidered signatures as a visual representation of the Creativity Petition. They are asking crafters to get creative and send your stitched signature (this can be crocheted, embroidered, knitted, cross-stitched, the more creative the better) to be added to their wall of signatures. Alternatively if you are attending you can bring your stitched signature to the show yourself. To find out where to send signatures to see the link here and don’t forget to share your crafty creations on social media and encourage others to get involved by using the #campaignforcreativity

Also this year the Spring Knitting and Stitching Show are hosting an all crocheted and knitted afternoon tea competition in partnership with Betty Blythe Vintage Tea Rooms. They are challenging visitors to crochet or knit any item you would find in a traditional English tea room, think knitted scones and jam, crocheted Prosecco flutes, cucumber sandwiches, tea sets and more.

Hook and a Book | Product Review & Coupon Code

Disclaimer: I did receive a free sample of this product however I have not been financially compensated by the supplier to write this review. All opinions expressed are my own and based on my own experiences of using the product.

Instagram

You may have guessed by my blog and posts that I am completely passionate about all things crochet…but I actually have another hobby which I love just as much. If I’ve got the time and it’s not a hook in my hand then you’ll usually find a book. So when I was contacted by the owner of Hook and a Book, to see if I’d like to review her subscription boxes, from the name alone I already knew I was probably going to love it.

Hook and a Book is the brain-child of Maddy McMurray an avid crocheter and bookworm turned craft-entrepreneur.  Originally from Perth, in Western Australia, she moved to the UK in 2011 where she worked in various operations-based roles.  But with growing job dissatisfaction and a newly diagnosed headache and migraine condition she decided that something had to change – and that’s when Hook and a Book was born.  Maddy cleverly moulded her passions into a monthly book and crochet subscriptions box creating a book club and crochet gift in one. Each box is carefully curated around a particular surprise book with yarn, a pattern and other goodies.

Maddy was kind enough to send me the August box to have a look at and I eagerly waited for it to arrive. First off I need to say that to me the idea of combining crochet and reading is just inspired! I absolutely LOVE the concept! And it was all very exciting to have the parcel delivered without knowing what I was going to find inside…

02

Underneath the tissue paper I found a lovely little letter from Hook and a Book, a copy of The Art of Dancing in the Rain by Garth Stein, one ball each of Stylecraft Special Aran (in shades Empire and Emperor), an ergonomic 4mm (US size G) hook, two little Beanies coffee sachets (mint chocolate and double chocolate) and a pattern by Simply Hooked by Janet to make a cute doggy themed coffee cup cosy. There was also a special password to the Hook and a Book website to find hints and tips for the current box.

03

I adored how carefully everything had been selected and styled in similar colours; the yarn matched the book cover, the book was linked with the pattern and the pattern was linked with the coffee gift.

I also really liked the fact that the book was not one that I perhaps would have picked for myself but that’s the way that you discover treasures you never even knew existed isn’t it! And The Art of Dancing in the Rain is a little gem of a book. I’m not going to give too much away but the plot follows the protagonist dog Enzo (great name for a dog) as he takes stock of his life. You can’t help but fall in love with Enzo even if you aren’t a dog lover. Though the story is told from Enzo’s point of view the book isn’t really about dogs at all, it’s a story about family, love, loyalty, and hope. I got totally caught up with the characters (which is always the sign of a good book in my eyes) and was completely invested in finding out how it was all going to end. But to find that out you’ll have to give it a read – I will say that you might want to have some tissues ready!

04

I was very pleased to see Stylecraft Aran in the box. It happens to be some of my favourite yarn as it’s always a delight to work with, and Empire and Emperor are two of my particular favoured colourways. The cup cosy, worked in tapestry crochet, turned out very cute. I chose to hook up the little paw print design, or I could have chosen a bone, and I think the end result would look grand on any dog lovers coffee cup. And as an added bonus there was still loads of yarn left over to add to my stash!

06

I very much enjoyed all the contents and my experience with my box from Hook and a Book! The perfect gift for a book or crochet lover subscriptions start at £21 per month with different options for 3, 6 or yearly subscriptions.  There is also the option for a one off box so you can try before you subscribe AND they also offer international subscriptions so no one has to miss out.

If you’d like to try Hook and a Book be sure to use the following coupon link ‘WELCOME‘ for 10% discount. Big thank you to Maddy for offering this special deal to my lovely KCACO.UK readers!

Until next time; keep calm and crochet on my friends xx
