It’s November already! The days are growing shorter, the air has that crisp festive sparkle, and I can already feel the magic of Christmas creeping in. Itโs the perfect time to curl up with a favourite skein of yarn, sip something warm and spiced, and start creating handmade keepsakes to treasure for years to come.
Thatโs why Iโm so excited to join this yearโs Christmas Ornament Keepsake Blog Hop, hosted by Stardust Gold Crochet, celebrating all things festive, fun, and full of crochet cheer! This special event is a joyful showcase of 24 beautiful crochet ornaments and keepsake patterns – each one designed to bring a touch of handmade magic to your holiday season.

Time for a September update on my 2025 Crochet Book Blanket project. I canโt believe weโve already reached the โberโ months! After a wonderful summer filled with family time and plenty of opportunities to read, Iโm excited to settle into a new season of page-turning. Who else is ready for cosy reading sessions, whether itโs curled up in bed or tucked into a comfy chair with a blanket?
Pin for later:
That said I’ve had to hustle a little to catch up with my squares this month as we are moving into the busiest period of the year for me – but I’m still going!
The Vision for the Book Afghan
To maintain cohesion, Iโve used the same block pattern for the entire afghan (grab the free pattern here), working with yarn from my stash and selecting colours that reflect the bookโs cover design. The ultimate goal? A warm, meaningful blanket that doubles as a literary keepsake.
Synopsis: A slow-burning, beautifully written piece of historical fiction, Winter Garden by Kristin Hannah follows two estranged sisters who, after their fatherโs death, finally begin to understand their cold, enigmatic mother. Through the unfolding of a haunting fairy tale rooted in war-torn Leningrad, long-buried family secrets come to light, reshaping everything they thought they knew.
Synopsis: This was such a unique book with prose interspersed with comic book strip which I thought was a really interesting way to tell the story. When fourteen-year-old Trixie Stone accuses her ex-boyfriend of raping her, her tightly knit family is thrown into crisis. Her father, comic-artist Daniel, facing dark echoes from his past, and her mother, Laura, a college professor hiding her own affair, both scramble to protect her, even as the worst happens and the police begin to suspect even their own daughter. Itโs a gripping family drama about how far parents will go, and what happens when the line between right and revenge blurs.
Synopsis: In this instalment, DI Helen Grace faces perhaps her most destructive foe yet – a cold-blooded arsonist whose fiery rampage across the city seems designed not just to kill, but to terrify and obliterate. As homes go up in flames, lives are shattered and the pressure mounts. Helen must navigate bureaucratic roadblocks, mounting public fear and her own inner turmoil to stop the blaze before it consumes more innocents. I’m enjoying working my way through this series, like the others it’s was fast paced with a compelling storyline.
Synopsis: This book had such a promising premise, I enjoyed it but felt like the pacing did slow down in the middle though it was tided up nicely at the end. A seemingly ordinary domestic flight turns unforgettable when a quiet woman dubbed โThe Death Ladyโ stands up mid-air and predicts the manner and age of death for her fellow passengers. As her chilling forecasts begin to come true months later, each passenger is forced to confront fate, free will and how much control we really have over our lives.
Synopsis: Molly Grayโs life is about to take a dramatic turn. As Head Maid and newly installed Special Events Manager at the grand Regency Grand Hotel, sheโs gearing up for her wedding and ready for good things when a reality-TV treasure-hunting show arrives. What seems like a fun appraisal of her grandmotherโs trinkets turns into a revelation: a priceless heirloom, an explosion of media attention, and then the prized object vanishes in a daring art heist. Molly and her friends must dive into the past โ aided by her grandmotherโs hidden diary โ to uncover long-buried secrets, reveal the truth of the theft, and protect everything sheโs built. Whilst I really loved Molly the Maid from the first book in this latest book I felt that her character (and the other characters in the book) were becoming more caricatures of their former selves – as a consequence I found it a little hard to stay engaged with the story.
Synopsis: Three women, Margot, Anna and Liv, live on the same suburban street, each hiding secrets darker than their glossy exteriors. The novel opens on Bonfire Night with someone bound and gagged within a blazing bonfire, then rewinds eleven months to show how their lives spiralled into murder, betrayal and revenge. With escalating tension, shifting perspectives and unrelenting twists, it asks: who did the killing โฆ and who got killed first? After a great opening chapter I found the intermittent chapters in italics a bit confusing but it does all come together in the end. Not my favourite Marrs book, but a good read all the same.
Synopsis: Twelve-year-old Percy Jackson discovers heโs no ordinary kid but a demigod – the son of the sea-god Poseidon, when heโs accused of stealing the powerful lightning bolt of Zeus. With the help of his satyr friend Grover Underwood and the daughter of the goddess Athena, Annabeth Chase, Percy embarks on a high-stakes quest across America, battling monsters and unravelling ancient myths in a modern setting – all to clear his name and prevent a war among the gods. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this. As someone who has always loved Greek and Roman myths it was a really good romp of a story – I’ll probably continue reading the rest of the series at some point.

Iโm so excited to share my latest free pattern, created in collaboration with Utopia Crafts – a wonderful yarn company based in Exeter, Devon.
Established in 2019, Utopia Crafts have developed a wide range of yarns in diverse colours and weights, all thoughtfully created to meet the needs of their customers.
For this project, I fell head over heels with their Country Wool Aran – a 80% Acrylic, 20% Wool yarn spun in a classic Aran (worsted) weight. Itโs beautifully soft yet structured, and I knew straight away it would be perfect for a neutral pumpkin idea I had.
I used a single ball of the Country Wool Aran with a 5mm (US size H/8) hook and it makes quite a large sized pumpkin. The finished size of mine was 57 cm [22.4″] diameter x 11.5 cm [4.5″] high.
While bright orange will always have a special place in autumn dรฉcor, neutral tones, think soft creams, oatmeals, greys, and taupes to bring a timeless, rustic elegance to your home. The great thing is that those colours will work beautifully with most interior style, and theyโre subtle enough to keep on display well beyond October.
Pin it for Later:
And because itโs an Aran weight yarn, this pattern works up super quickly, you can make a pumpkin (or a whole patch of them!) in no time at all. Itโs the ideal project for a cosy autumn evening. Beginners will hopefully find this pattern approachable, while more seasoned crocheters can appreciate the opportunity to relax with a project that doesnโt require intense concentration.
That said there are loads of beautiful shades of Country Wool Aran so you could make pumpkins any colours you would like – I can’t wait to see what you come up with.
๐งถ The free pattern is available now from the Utopia Crafts website.
Until next time folks! Happy hooking and keep calm and crochet on my friends xx

Today Iโm delighted to be joining in the Furls Designer Blog Hop 2025! Iโve teamed up with Furls and some incredibly talented designers as they bring you a whole year of beautiful free crochet patterns โ one new pattern every two weeks, all made with Furls Yarn.

What is the Furls Designer Blog Hop?
If youโre not familiar with the Furls Blog Hop, itโs a year-long celebration of crochet and creativity. Every two weeks, a different designer releases a brand-new free crochet pattern using Furls Fiberart Wander yarn. You may remember last year I participated with the Foundry Fusion Shawl, and this year I’m back sharing a new free design.
You can find lots of free patterns (and grab any youโve missed!), plus access other great crochet related articles, right here on the Furls Blog landing page. Whether youโre here for wearables, accessories, or home dรฉcor, the hop is a wonderful way to discover new styles and designers โ and get inspired all year long.
My Design: The Forester Shawl
Iโm so pleased to introduce you to my contribution to this yearโs hop: The Forester Shawl. My design is nod to lush greenery of the forests where I love to go for a walk.
The Forester Shawl is big, bold, and incredibly cosy โ perfect for transitional seasons or even cooler summer evenings when you want something comforting but breathable.
I used Furls Fiberart Wander yarn for my shawl which is a 100% acrylic, worsted weight (Aran) yarn that comes in 100g balls. Each ball has approximately 120 yards/ 109m and has a lovely lustre about it and it’s also super soft to crochet with.
I used five different colours of Furls Fiberart Wander yarn in my shawl. You could of course use less colours, but when selecting your colours, consider shades that complement each other to create a pleasing gradient or contrast.
One of the best features of the The Forester Shawl is its speed to work up. Thanks to the worsted (aran) weight yarn and straightforward pattern, you can whip up a lovely big shawl in no time. Itโs also a perfect mindful project, with easy pattern repeats, for those moments when you want to indulge in a satisfying and easy crochet session.
Beginners will hopefully find this pattern approachable, while more seasoned crocheters can appreciate the opportunity to relax with a project that doesnโt require intense concentration.
Scroll down for the free version of this pattern but Iโd recommend the purchase of the ad-free PDF Pattern if youโd like all the instructions and pictures in a nice document which you can print and take notes on without relying on your phone or an internet connection.
Obtaining the correct gauge is not critical to this project but if your gauge does not match the gauge stated then your finished item will be a different size.

Steam blocking is best for an acrylic shawl. Pin shawl in place, then gently steam without touching the fabric to set the shape safely.
FINISHING:
Using the left over colours make two chunky tassels to go on the long ends of the shawl.
And thatโs it!

BLOCKING
This design may benefit from being blocked, as it is an acrylic yarn steam blocking is one of the best methods you can use. Simply pin the item into shape and hover a steam iron or garment steamer over it without touching the fabric. Let the steam relax the fibres, then allow to cool/dry.

February has been a month of stories and stitches, bringing new inspiration to my Crochet Book Blanket project for 2025. With each book Iโve read, another square has taken shape, capturing the essence of the story. This challenge continues to blend my love of reading and crochet, and Iโm excited to share how each tale has influenced my latest squares! This month has seen a big increase in my reading, a combination of quick reads and time away (which for me equals time to read) – bliss!
Hereโs what I accomplished in February:
Total Books Read: and Squares Completed: 8 books, 16 squares
Synopsis: The highly anticipated third book in The Empyrean series (following Fourth Wing and Iron Flame). As tensions rise at Basgiath War College, Violet Sorrengail and her allies face greater dangers than ever, with war looming and secrets threatening to unravel everything they know. Packed with high-stakes action, romance, and dragon-fuelled battles, this instalment, starts off a little slowly but from chapter 30 onwards gets rather exciting!
Synopsis:The Midnight Hour by Eve Chase is a gripping family mystery that spans decades. When a womanโs body is discovered in a grand country house, long-buried secrets begin to unravel, linking past and present. As the truth slowly emerges, the novel weaves a tale of love, betrayal, and the shadows that linger within families.
Synopsis: Loved this book! It’s a powerful tale of friendship and survival set during World War I. Told through the eyes of Joey, a courageous horse, the story follows his journey from a peaceful farm to the brutal battlefields of Europe. As he faces hardship and forms unbreakable bonds, his young owner, Albert, never gives up hope of bringing him home.
Synopsis: A creepy gothic ghost story set in the remote English countryside. When Leslie moves to a remote Scottish cottage for a fresh start, he soon realises he is not alone. As eerie occurrences escalate, Les is forced to confront a dark past that refuses to stay buried.
Synopsis: I love a Frieda McFadden book, they are always quick reads and this didn’t disappoint. The Crash is a gripping psychological thriller with some nice twisty turny bits in it. After a devastating car accident, the protagonistโs life is thrown into chaos, and she begins to question the truth behind the crash. As she uncovers hidden secrets and dark twists, sheโs forced to confront a terrifying reality, leading to an explosive and unexpected conclusion.
Synopsis: The premise of this book was so interesting! The Perfect Wife is a tense psychological thriller that explores the fine line between control and obsession. Abbie, a woman who lost her memory and spent years in a coma after a horrific accident, is shocked to discover that her husband, a tech mogul, has created a robotic replica of her. As Abbie uncovers unsettling truths about her marriage, she begins to question the intentions behind her husband’s perfect creation.
Synopsis: Really liked the premise of this book. It’s a dystopian novel set in a future where aging has been cured, and immortality comes at a cost. Sixteen-year-old Anna is a “Surplus,” born illegally in a world where only those who opt out of eternal life can have children. Raised to believe she should repent for existing, Annaโs world is turned upside down when Peter arrives at the Surplus Hall, claiming she has a right to freedomโand a past she never knew.
Synopsis: Thoroughly enjoyed this book (I do love historical fiction). The Foundling is a compelling historical novel set in 18th-century London. Six years after leaving her newborn daughter at the Foundling Hospital, Bess Bright returns to reclaim herโonly to discover that someone else has already taken her child. As she searches for the truth, her life becomes entangled with a wealthy widow who harbours secrets of her own.
My Rating: โญโญโญโญ4 stars (out of 5)
Looking Ahead to March
Iโm excited to keep going with my Crochet Book Blanket Challengethis March! Each square feels like a little memory of the books Iโve read, and itโs amazing how every round brings the stories back to life.
Have you read any of the same books as me? What did you think of them? Or are you joining in making a book blanket too? Iโd love to hear how your blanket is coming along! Or do you have a favourite book that would make a great square for my afghan? Send me your suggestionsโIโd love to add more literary inspiration!
Stay tuned for next monthโs updates. Until then, happy hooking and happy reading!
P.S. Iโd love to stay connected with you so please do sign up to blog (below) and / or my mailing list to get a reminder when new blog posts, giveaways, special offers or new pattern releases are available.

If thereโs one thing that comes close to my love of crochet, itโs reading. A cosy corner, a warm blanket, a gripping book and a tasty snack is my ultimate definition of bliss! This year, Iโve decided to merge these passions by challenging myself to create a book-related afghan!
Iโve seen these incredible book blankets popping up online, and Iโve always admired the creativity behind them. Usually it’s something like each square, strip, or motif which is used to reflect the books someoneโs read throughout the year. Itโs such a meaningful way to blend two hobbies, and I couldnโt resist joining in. I also couldn’t resist designing something a little special for it which I’m delighted to share with you today.
Pin this for later:
Why a Book Blanket?
For me, this project is more than just a way to document my readingโitโs a tangible reflection of the moments spent diving into stories and crafting between chapters. Plus, I wanted to tackle something that felt manageable and personal. A book afghan seemed like the perfect fit.
I’ve always wanted to do something like a temperature blanket, but knew it wouldn’t be something I could realistically keep up with, however I knew I could commit to this project. The flexibility to decide how to represent each book, in my case through coloured motifs, makes this challenge feel less daunting and more exciting.
Stashbusting Bonus!
Another reason Iโm so excited about this challenge is that itโs the perfect opportunity for a much-needed stash busting session! My yarn stash has grown considerably (okay, maybe a little out of control – maybe you saw my ‘cupboard of doom’ reel on Instagram), and this project will help me whittle it down while creating something beautiful and meaningful. It will feel great to breathe new life into leftover yarns Iโve been holding onto for far too long.
Book Selection: For every book I read, Iโll crochet two blocks. The number of blocks will depend on how many books I finish (hopefully, plenty!). I’ll be using Good Reads to track the books I do read this year so I can always catch up if I get a little behind.
Physical: For my challenge I’m just going to use physical books I’ve read. This is not because I’m a book snob, I personally think it’s ‘reading’ however you consume a book, but as I listen to A LOT of audiobooks it could make my blanket HUGE and unmanageable to keep up with.
Block Design: To keep things cohesive, Iโll use the same block pattern throughout the blanket. Scroll down for the free pattern Iโll be usingโitโs perfect for this project if youโd like to join in!
Stash Prioritisation: Iโll use yarn from my stash as much as possible, choosing colours that align (as close as possible) with the bookโs cover design. I’ll be using this image picker tool to help me select the main colours from the book covers. I’m also going to be using DK (8ply / Light Worsted) for my squares – but the pattern will work with any yarn weight. I’ll be using a maximum of 4 colours for each block.
Synopsis Sharing: With each block, Iโll share a little synopsis of the book Iโve read. So, if youโre looking for some new reading material, you might find inspiration here too!
Coherence: I’ve decided I’m going to keep the centre of each of my blocks ‘white’ to represent the pages of the book, and use 3 other colours picked out from the front cover.
Consistency: Iโll set aside a little time to stay on track! Iโm determined to keep up with this challenge! But I feel that making one square after each book shouldn’t be too hard to keep up with?!
Sharing: I’ll share my finished squares and the books I’ve read at the end of each month. For those that love a community crochet-along if you want to join in too then I’ll be using the hashtag #KCACOUKBookCAL2025. I can’t wait to see your squares and what you’ve been reading!
