Crochet Pattern | Coronation Chicken Amigurumi

Hi, how are you doing today? I’ve got something a little fun and tongue in cheek to share with you. I really wanted to come up with a commemorative project for the forthcoming King’s Coronation – and well all I could think of was coronation chicken…so that’s what I’ve made!

Meet Colin the Coronation Chicken, a eggs-traordinarily hen-some fellow who would make a great commemorative souvenir or gift for a royalty lover.

He’s im-peck-ably dressed for the occasion in a hen-semble of sash, crown and ermine trimmed cloak – aren’t my chicken puns just heir-larious!

I made Colin with a 3mm hook and some Ricorumi DK from my stash. I love Ricorumi DK especially for amigurumi as it comes in loads of different colours.

Made of 100% cotton this smooth-finished yarn comes in cute 25g [57.5 meters] balls just perfect for projects where you just want to use a small amount of a particular colour.

Colin’s crown, sceptre and orb are made from Rico Ricorumi Lamé DK – Gold (002) which is super sparkly yarn perfectly suited to royal accessories. It comes in 10g [50m] and is made from 62% polyester and 38% nylon.

The only other things you need to make Colin are 2 x 6mm black safety eyes, stitch markers, some black embroidery thread,a tapestry needle and some toy stuffing. His finished size is 16cm / 6.3 inches high from bottom to top of his crown.

The majority of this pattern is worked in amigurumi style, using continuous rounds, and then the parts are sewn together using the mattress stitch.

Of course if you didn’t want to deck him out in his finery then Colin makes a very cute rooster which could look great as part of your Spring or farmhouse style decor.

I Like Crochet Magazine | Patchwork Puppy

Today I’m going to share the last of the patterns I created for the April 2023 edition of I Like Crochet magazine. Bright and cheerful, and an excellent stash buster, allow me to introduce the Patchwork Puppy.

A great pattern for all the dog-lovers out there, this perfect patchwork pup is fab for using up any
part balls of yarn you have hanging around! With his colourful tummy and eye patch he’ll win over
fans of every age.

I created my pup with a 3mm hook and various colours of Ricorumi DK which, if you are not not familiar with it, is a100% cotton yarn which comes in 25g [57.5 meters] balls. I love Ricorumi DK especially for amigurumi as it comes in the cute little balls in loads of different colours so I can usually find the shades that I’m looking for.

The only other things you will need to make the pup are stitch markers, a tapestry needle and some toy stuffing and a needle and sewing thread.

I Like Crochet Magazine | Countryside Pillow

How is it already nearing the end of march already? I can’t quite believe how fast this year is going by! I’ve not yet told you about the second design, of the three, that I created the April 2023 edition of I Like Crochet magazine. This next design is inspired by bright cheerful Spring walks; allow me to introduce the Countryside Pillow.

The layered landscape of the countryside on a bright day inspired this pillow. Next weekend is one of my favourites time of the year here in the UK as our clocks go forward.

It means we’ll gain an extra hour of daylight everyday, making it so much more bright and cheerful all round. That of course means that we have longer days to crochet by – woo hoo!

For my pillow I used a combination of John Arbon Textiles yarns and a 3mm (US closest size D/3). The main section of the pillow is made with 200g (250m per 100g) of Appledore yarn which is 40% Devon Closewool / 40% Romney / 20% Exmoor Blueface.

I then combined this with some of their Appledore Mini DK skeins (25g / 62m) and some Knit by Numbers Mini DK skeins, which is (at the time of writing this) is 100% Merino to create the hills and valleys on the front of the pillow.

I really enjoy crocheting with both of these yarns, each skein is dyed with a beautiful vibrancy to create a palette of shades that work together beautifully.

Crocheted using the altered berry stitch and a smattering of different yarns and colors, this pattern could also be a great stash buster to create a landscape at sunrise or sunset, fields of green or fields of wheat.

The only other things you will need to make your pillow is a tapestry needle, scissors, 14 inch (36cm) cream zip and a 16×16 inch cushion inner.

I Like Crochet Magazine | Bouquet Bobby Pins and Barrette

I’m delighted to say that I’ve got three brand news designs in the April 2023 edition of I Like Crochet magazine. In this issue they’ve put together 16+ fresh spring patterns meant to get your creativity flowing, allow me to introduce the first pattern of mine; the Bouquet Bobby Pins and Barrette set.

With the clocks going back at the end of the month, here in the UK, we are looking forward to that cold weather fading and signs of life bursting from the once-frozen ground! It’s hard not to get excited about the new season head: spring!

I love Spring, it’s such a period of anticipation of warmer weather, allowing us to spend more time outside, and I look eagerly for those first flowers to bloom.

So it’s time to tuck these botanical pins into your locks for a whimsical spring look. The pattern allows you to arrange and design your own placement for the flowers and leaves for each pin allowing you to customize to your heart’s content.

I used Scheepjes Maxi Sweet Treat, which is a lace weight yarn for my hair accessories with a 1.75mm (US size 6) hook. The yarn is 100% Cotton; 142 yards 140 meters / 25 grams and I used six different colours, (519 Freesia, 395 Willow, 247 Bluebird, 252 Watermelon, 411 Sweet Orange, 266 Light Orchid), but you could make in any colour to match a theme or outfit.

The only other things you will need to make your floral clips are the blank hair accessory pieces to add your flowers to. I used these Cabochon hair clips from Etsy which were perfect, along with these diy barrettes (also from Etsy), and this is the glue gun I used (also from Amazon) which I can recommend.

From holidays to weddings these hair clips are perfect for adding some Spring zing to your outfits.

New Pattern Release | Koito Crocodile Cowl with Yarn Discount

This perennially chic and effortlessly sophisticated cowl is crying out to be combined with that extra special skein you’ve been saving.

This fabulously dramatic cowl, with it’s showy stitches, was something I’d had in mind ever since I first saw, and then subsequently purchased, some hand dyed yarn called ‘Koi Pond – Showa’ from The Yarn Whisperer.

The yarn is sock weight (4ply) 80% Corriedale wool, 20% nylon with splashes of bright oranges, greys and rich creams. They are the colours you would find on the ‘Showa’ variety of ornamental koi which was Kitey’s inspiration for this particular colourway.

I knew I wanted to create something using a stitch that kind of looked like fish scales which is why I used the crocodile stitch – it’s definitely one of the most unique stitch and texture you can make in crochet. I’m in love with the texture; it’s the type that just makes you want to run your fingers over it!

Pattern Re-Release | Chevron Spectrum Wrap

“Red and yellow and pink and green, purple and orange and blue, I can sing a rainbow, sing a rainbow, sing a rainbow too!” Envelop yourself in rainbows with the Chevron Spectrum Wrap!

Today I’m doing an independent release of the rainbow Chevron Spectrum Wrap which first appeared in in Happily Hooked Magazine (Issue 94) back in January 2022.

This colourful piece is sure to put a smile on your face! It was one of my absolute favourite makes of 2022 and was inspired by both the yarn and my idea for the stitch which I think came together perfectly.

I used a Scheepjes Whirl in Jumping Jelly (shade 759) combined with a Scheepjes Whirlette in Chewy (shade 865) with a 3.25mm hook (US size D/3).

Both the whirls and the whirlettes are a 60% Cotton, 40% Acrylic 4ply (fingering weight). The larger whirl comes in a 220g (1000 metres) cake, and the whirlettes are 100g (455m) solid colour balls designed to compliment whirl colours. However I wanted a bit of a stormy contrast to my rainbow which is why I chose the grey.

This delightful chevron wrap is perfect for combining solid and gradient yarn for an overall fun zig zag ombre effect, the whirls are perfect though I’ve also seen some beautiful versions using hand-dyed yarn – you could substitute with any similar sock / fingering weight yarns (though you may wish to check your gauge).

The pattern is available in both UK and US terms and I’ve included a chart as a helpful visual guide. The wrap is worked in row repeat making it a nice mindful pattern once you get into the swing of things. I would suggest it’s suitable for a more intermediate crocheter – though there is nothing to stop an adventurous beginner having a go!

Crochet Now Magazine | Peanuts Baby Loveys

Stars of the Charles M. Schulz’s comic strip Peanuts, and later TV and movies, Snoopy is best known as the pet beagle of Charlie Brown and the small yellow bird, Woodstock, is Snoopy’s best friend. Everybody loves Snoopy and all fans of the iconic series will adore these super soft and cuddly lovey blankets.

There are so many options for little blankets for babies to cuddle and the right toy will do wonders for your kid’s comfort and confidence – my eldest fixed on a lovey as her ‘toy of choice’ so I personally think they are a great toy to make and gift.

I created Snoopy and Woodstock out of some Stylecraft Special DK which is 100% acrylic that comes in 100g balls [295 meters / 323yds] balls, it’s a yarn I’m very familiar with, one I’ve used so many times for different projects including this years crochet along. The only other things you need to make Snoopy and Woodstock is some, stitch markers, a tapestry needle and some toy stuffing.

The lovey section and the tops (hands and arms) are made in the round, working in the amigurumi style of continuous rounds without joining, they would make great beginners patterns for someone who’d like to try making an amigurumi.

Peppermint Pageant MAL | The Reveal & Pattern Release

Howdy, how are you all today? I’m just popping on today to tell you of my first pattern release of 2023!

The 26th of January was the last ‘official’ day of the latest make along that has been hosted by The Yarn Whisperer and myself. From the 26 December 2022 until now, over a month later, we have enjoyed our winter make along project with a bunch of lovely mal’ers. And now I get the opportunity to share my finished Peppermint Pageant Stocking, and it’s pattern, with you!

Inspired by Christmas colours of red, white and green and by hand made Scandinavian fairisle type patterns I really enjoyed coming up with my own tapestry crochet version of a tradition stocking.

As always it’s been an absolute delight to work with Kitey and his gorgeously coloured yarn, I love these collabs we do – it always provides me with an opportunity to work with gorgeous yarn which in turn makes the design process super enjoyable.

The Aran yarn in this case was such a beautiful yarn to crochet with and I thoroughly enjoyed seeing the slight variations of the semi solid colours come through as I worked each stitch.

If this is the first you’ve heard about the The Peppermint Pageant MAL you can read more about it here but in a nutshell it’s the result of a wonderful collaboration between myself and Kitey, aka The Yarn Whisperer, of a unique crocheted stocking designed with a special hand dyed yarn in mind.

It’s made us both incredibly happy to see the photos of folks sharing their progress with us on social media and I hope you will continue to do so as you finish your stockings if you haven’t had chance to make it yet.

Although the official end date of the MAL has come to an end DO NOT feel any panic or worry that you didn’t keep up or haven’t even started yet. The deadline was there just for those people that like a deadline, for everyone else, enjoy it when you have the time to use the yarn and / or make the stocking – there is no rush to this crochet makealong! And sometime in the future you will have a beautiful finished object that you can gift for someone special or to enjoy yourself.

Now that the MAL is over, I have listed the pattern in my usual pattern stores for you to make your own version of the The Peppermint Pageant Stocking.

I would suggest three different colours work best, I used 100g / 166m of a main colour (e.g. White) and 50g / 83m in contract colours (e.g. Green and Red) and a 5mm (US size H/8) hook.

If you’d like to pick up this specific kit colourway then you can pick it up from Kitey and EXCITEDLY the Peppermint Pageant kits are getting an upgrade for 2023. This design and yarn combo are going to be the first make-along kit that will keep going this year. Kitey is coming up with some exciting new colourways as we speak that I can’t wait to see come together (I’m looking at you teal and silver – oooo!)

The pattern has a written version, a chart and comes with a bonus pattern to make your own mini hanging stocking decorations – Kitey and I always like to add a little extra something for those scraps of leftover yarn! The pattern comes with all explanation of stitches used and is available in either UK or US terminology.

Crochet Now Magazine | Lola the Ladybird

Send a little love to that special someone in your life with Lola the Lovebug. Packed full of love from antennae to the tips of her toes she will be sure to be loved by everyone!

The pattern for Lola, along with her little heart, is available in issue 90 of Crochet Now magazine. Lola comes equipped with delicate hearts on top of her antennae making her a true love bug! She was a really fun project to work on, and you could make her holding the heart, or leave it separate, or why not even embroider the initials of someone special onto the front.

I created my lovebug with a 3mm hook out of some James C. Brett It’s 100% Pure Cotton which is 100% cotton that comes in 100g [215 meters / 235yds] balls and, for a cotton, is lovely and soft.

The only other things you need to make the Lola is some black embroidery thread, stitch markers, a tapestry needle and some toy stuffing.

NEW Mini Crochet Kit | Reindeer Bauble Kit

December is moving far too fast for my liking and I just haven’t had a chance to tell you about a crochet new kit I have in my Etsy shop! I don’t know about you but I could do with another couple of weeks until Christmas – I think I always forget how busy things get at this time of year.

But I do deerly love the holiday season and so I’m going to squeeze in telling you about a new little crochet kit that I hope you will find quite reindeering!

Okay, it might be time to rein in the puns a little….if you haven’t already guessed the kit is for a reindeer hanging ornament. Much like the mini crochet kits I released last year (see all the mini crochet kits here along with a big kit). This one was also released at the latest weekend Crochet Sanctuary where I was kindly allowed to bring a pop up shop to share with the other guests a range of my KCACOUK, Yarnybobs and Dear Ewe products.

Add a touch of festive cheer to your home with a sweet hanging reindeer ornament; it’s that happy bit of handmade hooking which will add that personalised reindeer touch to your Christmas Tree.

Each kit contains 30g of Scheepjes Catona, the pattern, a length of black embroidery thread, a silver jingle bell and a length of twine all in a reusable christmas bauble! There’s also the optional tool extra of picking up a premium bamboo 3mm hook (US approx. size D/3) if you don’t have one of those to hand.

These bauble crochet kits sold out when I was at the crochet sanctuary (though I’ve got some more stock now) and it’s been lovely to see some of the little reindeer that have been whipped up already from the kits.

Whether you’re super organised or more of a last-minute buyer, yule need to make a note of the following dates to ensure your pressies are (hopefully) delivered in time for the big day.

As we have had all the Royal mail strikes here in the UK I feel I’ve had no choice but to bring forward domestic Christmas posting deadlines to Friday 16 December. It’s been a fair old stressful time for small businesses with the postal issues (so please know that we do want our things to get to you as soon as possible but when it leaves us it’s out of our control). However I also want to continue to support the post office as I feel that it’s one of those that if we don’t use it, we’ll eventually lose it.

Need to send abroad? Not a problem – like Santa, I do deliver all over the world, however I cannot guarantee delivery will be in time for Christmas, but a gift of crochet is fun at any time of year right!.

Then as my children are breaking up from school also on the 16 December I’ll mainly be spending some quality time with my family until the new year – though I will be popping on, on Boxing Day as we start our Peppermint Pageant MAL.
