Mischievous Magpie MAL | The Reveal & Pattern Release

Apologies for the delay with this release, the summer just flew by and I don’t know where September and October has gone! But I’m thrilled to at last share the final details of the Mischievous Magpie Shawlette with you! This shawlette was part of our 2024 summer make-a-long (MAL), and I’m beyond excited to unveil the completed pattern with all the special elements that made this project a joy to work on with each of you.

For those that weren’t aware this latest make-along was a collaboration between myself, Kitey, aka The Yarn Whisperer, and Mrs G Makes and was all about embracing the spirit of magpies—curious, playful, and just a bit mischievous!

This pattern was designed with versatility in mind. It features an elegant triangle shape that drapes effortlessly around your shoulders, perfect for those breezy evenings, early fall outings, or layering up as we head into the cooler months.

Collage featuring hand-dyed yarn inspired by magpie plumage, with skeins of semi-solid black, undyed cream, and vibrant sparkly blue tones. The yarn colours reflect the nearby images of two magpies, showcasing their contrasting black and white feathers and flashes of iridescent blue, mimicking the birds' striking, natural elegance.

As always it’s been an absolute delight to work with Kitey and his gorgeously coloured yarn, I love these collabs we do – it always provides me with an opportunity to work with gorgeous yarn which in turn makes the design process super enjoyable.

The yarn choice for the Mischievous Magpie Shawlette was inspired by the magpie’s striking plumage. Kitey perfectly captured the bold, contrasting colours and subtle sheen with a semi-solid black for depth and drama paired with an undyed yarn reminiscent of light catching on a feather’s edge. To complete the look, a touch of sparkly blue adds a wonderful pop of colour and shimmer, mirroring the flashes of iridescent blue that magpies flaunt in the sunlight.

Close-up of two stitch markers from the Mischievous Magpie make-a-long kit: one featuring a tiny enamel bird with black and white detailing, and the other an iridescent bead that catches the light with a subtle shimmer, adding a playful, magpie-inspired touch to each crochet project.

And in amongst the kit there were, as always, the cutest crochet accessories from the fabulous Mrs G Makes. Continuing the magpie theme she a cute enamel bird with black, white and blue detailing, and the other an iridescent bead that catches the light with a subtle shimmer, adding a playful, magpie-inspired touch to each crochet project.

It makes us all incredibly happy to see YOUR photos of the various stages of progress you make with your projects on social media – and I hope you will continue to do so as you finish your shawlettes’ if you haven’t had chance to make it yet.

Although the official end date of the MAL has come to an end DO NOT feel any panic or worry that you didn’t keep up or haven’t even started yet. The deadline was there just for those people that like a deadline, for everyone else, enjoy it when you have the time to use the yarn and / or make the shawlette – there is no rush to this crochet makealong! And sometime in the future you will have a beautiful finished object that you can gift for someone special or to enjoy yourself.

Now that the MAL is over, I have listed the pattern in my usual pattern stores for you to make your own version of the Mischievous Magpie triangular shawlette.

I would suggest three different colours work best; 100g of blue, 2 x 50g of black and white with a 3mm (Closest US size D/3) hook. The pattern includes a written version with supporting charts, detailed stitch explanations, and is available in both UK and US terminology.

We do hope that you’ve enjoyed this fun make-along, I know Kitey, Amanda and I have thoroughly enjoyed it!

Pattern Re-Release | Briar Blanket

Hey there, crochet friends! I’m so excited to re-introduce the Briar Blanket to you. If you’re looking for a cosy project to snuggle up with this season, you’ll definitely want to add this one to your “must-make” list!

Pin for Later:

Pinterest collage of the briar textured blanket crochet pattern by Keep Calm and Crochet On UK

This cosy blanket was originally featured in the August 2022 issue of I Like Crochet magazine, and I couldn’t be more thrilled with how it turned out. It’s so lovely and squishy – perfect for cuddling up on chilly evenings.

The Briar Blanket was born out of my love for nature—specifically, those peaceful woodland walks that are full of interesting textures and shapes. I wanted to capture the feeling of being wrapped up in something that reminds you of nature’s beauty.

Cosy Briar Textured crochet blanket, made in Aran weight yarn - perfect for snuggling into this autumn.

The design itself is a simple combination of stitches that creates a series of beautiful repeating patterns. I would suggest this intricate blanket is an intermediate pattern for crocheters looking for a fun challenge where you can enjoy watching the pattern come to life as you work.

I used the delectable Knit Picks Wool of the Andes Bulky for this blanket, which is 100% wool and comes in 100g hanks (137yds / 125m). Knit Picks Wool of the Andes Bulky is a heavy weight yarn that works up quickly; I used for the blanket were Currant 28211 (A, 6 balls), Gosling 28214 (B, 12 balls) and Fedora 28212  (C, 4 balls) with a 6mm (US size J/10) hook (which is amongst the suggested hook sizes).

Close up of the Briar Textured crochet blanket - the image shows the intricate textured stitches and the big tassels at the corners of the blanket.

This chunky blanket, with its large feature tassels, would make a perfect addition to style up your bed – or to keep as a throw on your sofa getting ready for when those nights turn cooler. Make in three muted complementary colours, like I did, or I think it would look stunning in jewel tones for a rich, cosy feel, or even pastels for a soft and serene vibe.

Crochet Now | Ghoulie the Ghost Cushion

Are you ready for some Halloween fun? I’m thrilled to introduce a boo’tiful project for this spooky season – meet Ghoulie the Ghost Cushion from Issue 112 of Crochet Now – he’s just ‘dying’ to party! Whether you’re gearing up for the biggest Halloween party of the year or just looking to add some festive charm to your home, Ghoulie is here to bring some playful, not-so-spooky vibes to your décor.

A cute, crochet ghost cushion named Ghoulie, with a friendly, smiling face. Ghoulie has a soft white body with black eyes and a stitched mouth. The cushion is adorned with 'Boo' bunting that stretches across its top, featuring orange flags with black writing. The background is a cosy, autumn-themed setting with pumpkins and a few Halloween decorations.
© Practical Publishing 2024 (Crochet Now Issue 112)

Ghoulie is no ordinary ghost. With his tall hat and friendly grin, he’s the perfect cushion for cosy Halloween nights in. While others may think Halloween is all about scares, Ghoulie’s approach is more about fun and festivity, he’s here to be the ‘life’ (or afterlife!) of the party. He’s got a mischievous twinkle in his eye, but rest assured, he’s as soft and cuddly as can be!

This year, Ghoulie is pulling out all the stops for the big Halloween bash. He’s decked out in his very own handmade ‘Boo’ bunting – his favourite accessory! The bunting adds just the right touch of Halloween spirit without going over the top, making it perfect for anyone who enjoys a mix of spooky and sweet. Can’t you just picture him at the party, proudly hanging out on the sofa or as the centrepiece of a fun-filled living room?

A table top covered with various skeins of Yarnsmiths Create Super Chunky Yarn in a range of vibrant colours. The yarn is thick and fluffy, creating a soft, textured appearance. The colours include rich shades of orange, deep purple, black, rose pink, and warm mustard yellow. The background is a neutral, light surface that contrasts with the bold hues of the yarn.

For Ghoulie I used some Yarnsmiths Create Super Chunky, which was a new yarn to me. It’s a very squishy super chunky weight yarn that’s made from 100% Acrylic in 100g (80m) balls which helps make Ghoulie ‘hauntingly’ cute and ‘boo-tifully’ soft!

Standing at 70cm /27.5 inches tall the only other things you will need for Ghoulie are;

New Crochet Pattern Release | Festival Fusion Cowl

Hello, lovelies! I’m beyond excited to share with you my latest crochet pattern release: the Festival Fusion Cowl. This design holds a special place in my heart and I love how it turned out.

Image of the colourful funnel shaped crochet cowl, the Festival Fusion, made from Hook and Cwtch hand dyed yarn by Heather C Gibbs.

I have always had a penchant for crafting crochet cowls, and my favourite type of cowl to wear is a funnel shaped one. However I’ve never designed one of my own until now. This particular style of cowl resonates with me the most, as it offers both warmth and elegance – perfect for chilly days or adding a chic touch to any outfit.

I envisioned crafting a cowl that not only embraced the classic funnel silhouette but also incorporated experimenting with stitch patterns and that would showcase the two beautiful Hook and Cwtch handdyed skeins. I used ‘The Knight Bus’ (rich purples with pops of blue, yellow, orange and white’ and ‘Crookshanks’ (rich orange tones from light to dark) both yarns inspired by a love of Harry Potter. Though you could pick any two colours to reflect your own individual taste, I personally think the bigger the contrast the more effective your cowl could be.

The Festival Fusion crochet cowl by Heather C Gibbs, shown in merging colours of purple and orange shades against a background of green ivy.

The cowl came into creation as another collaboration with the lovely Jess from Hook and Cwtch. After the fun of working together on the Festival Fade Shawl, for last years Carry on Crafting Festival we decided we would do it again.

Alongside Amanda from Mrs G Makes we creating an exclusive Carry on Crafting Kit for all the yarny friends we knew that were going to the festival so we could all work on the same project whilst we were there.

As before the kit included beautiful hand-dyed yarn by Jess, a brand new pattern designed by me and some wonderful goodies from Amanda. The yarn that Jess created for this years project was just stunning! Called Neon Lights and Party Nights it was the softest blend of 4ply (fingering weight) 85% Superwash Extrafine Merino (19.5 micro) and 15% Nylon Yarn and we had a 100g / 400m of each colour. Amanda then created an exclusive tote bag, complete with sparkly writing, a matching yarn cosy (which perfectly holds the 100g / 800m cake of yarn you are working with), and ultra cute matching stitch marker.

Table top view of a purple tote bag with 'Festival Fusion' written on it, you can also see a stitch marker and yarn cosy, a pattern and two skeins of variegated hand dyed yarn.

To make my cowl I used a 4.5mm hook (closest US size 7). The pattern is a nice one to do with a fairly simple pattern repeat once you get into the swing of things. Then the only other techniques incorporated are increases placed at strategic points to create the wonderful funnel shape to the cowl. I would say that this pattern is suitable for adventurous beginner crocheters, offering an exciting opportunity to explore new stitches and techniques while creating a stunning accessory.

After Carry on Crafting I finished my second version in the new colour way of Neon Nights and Party Lights. Two absolutely gorgeous variegated yarns with beautiful pops of bright neon’s – I love how this version turned out. The UK the weather is definitely turning more Autumnal at the moment and I feel that both my cowls are going to get a lot of wear!

Simply Crochet Magazine | Granny Square Day 2024

Granny Square Day 2024, 15th August 2024, an annual crochet event with Simply Crochet magazine.

Hey there, crochet lovers! It’s time to gear up for another year of crochet fun and community spirit! It’s Granny Square Day 2024! Whether you’re a seasoned crocheter or just starting out, Granny Square Day is the perfect opportunity to celebrate this iconic motif that has brought joy to so many crafters around the world. It’s a virtual festival, mainly hosted on Instagram, where we connect with fellow crocheters from all corners of the globe.

Granny Square Day started back in 2014, and it’s been growing ever since. The idea was simple: fill the Instagram grid with beautiful granny squares, creating a patchwork of inspiration that anyone could be part of. Each square posted on this day becomes part of a larger tapestry, symbolising our shared love for crochet.

Collage of lots of beautiful and varied granny square designs that have been put together for Granny Square Day 2024

As previous years Simply Crochet the latest issue of the magazine (Issue 152) comes with the 40 Fabulous Granny Squares supplement to get your hooks sunk into. Filled with all new granny square patterns there’s loads of inspiration for some new fabulously square projects.

And I’m really excited to say that I’ve designed two brand new granny square for this supplement. This years theme was entertainment, and my brain went to the circus!

The front cover of Simply Crochet 2024 is shown with the supplement 40 Fabulous Granny Squares supplement.
© Simply Crochet 2024 – Issue 152

Of the two squares I designed the first features a friendly clown and the second a ‘big top’ style motif with a stripy big top circle. I think combining both motifs could result in a really fun circus themed cushion or blanket – what would you use them for?

I used Rico Ricorumi for these blocks, with a 3.5mm hook (US E/4) which is a DK (Light Worsted) weight 100% cotton yarn that I had in my stash, but the designs would work equally well in any DK yarn or in fact with other fibres and yarn weights to make bigger or smaller blocks.

Granny squares are more than just a crochet motif; they’re a symbol of creativity, community, and comfort. They’re versatile, beginner-friendly, and can be turned into almost anything—from blankets to bags, clothing to coasters. Plus, they’re the perfect stash-busters, allowing you to use up those leftover bits of yarn in the most beautiful way.

Two granny squares designed for Granny Square Day 2024. The first features a clown and the second a 'big top' style motif with a stripy circle.

Simply Crochet Magazine is on sale from 6th August 2024 and is available to order online or download as a digital issue now. And want to join in with Granny Square Day? It’s super easy! All you have to do is hook, snap and share! All Granny Squares use #grannysquareday2024 and all Granny Square related projects use #grannysquaremakes2024 resulting in the BIGGEST VIRTUAL CROCHET BLANKET IN THE WORLD!

I know they aren’t for everyone but I’m a granny square fan, to me they are nothing to do with ‘grannys’ – they are just a super fun way to show how fun and versatile crochet can be! And there’s something for everyone in the 40 Fabulous Granny Squares supplement from more traditional looking squares to modern contemporary designs.

My Squares:

Pattern Re-Release | Ginger Gene the Gingerbread Man

Hi Lovelies! I’m absolutely thrilled to share some sweet news with you today! After receiving numerous requests and a sprinkle of festive cheer, I’m re-releasing one of my favourite seasonal patterns: Ginger Gene the Gingerbread Man. This delightful little character is perfect for adding a touch of holiday magic to your home, and I can’t wait for you all to crochet him.

Why am I releasing this festive pattern now I hear you ask? Well celebrating Christmas in July is the perfect opportunity to get a head start on holiday crafting, allowing you to create beautiful handmade gifts and decorations well before the winter rush.

Ginger Gene isn’t just any gingerbread man. He’s a dapper fellow with a cheeky smile, sporting a jaunty bow tie and buttons that make him stand out from the cookie crowd. Whether you’re looking to decorate your Christmas tree, create a charming table centrepiece, or find the perfect stocking stuffer, Ginger Gene is your guy.

I used a DK weight yarn (light worsted), and I’m suggesting Paintbox Simply DK (the DK yarn I originally used has now been discontinued). Paintbox Simply DK  is a 100% premium acrylic yarn that comes in 100g (276m) and is available in a wide variety of colours.

I used a 3mm hook (closest US size D/3) and the colours I’ve suggested are 1 ball of Paper White (100), Soft Fudge (109) with and a bit of Rose Red (113) and Grass Green (129). Other than that you would need two pairs of 12mm black safety eyes, black embroidery thread, some stitch markers, some toy filler, pins and a yarn needle to sew all the pieces together.

The 4 page pattern comes in either UK or US terms with full descriptions of any stitch abbreviations. It’s classed as an “easy” pattern which I’m hoping anyone new to crochet, along with more experienced crocheters will enjoy.

For those who love to have a physical copy, there’s a new printable version of the pattern. The pattern is available from my usual pattern stores for you to make your own version at the links below – but scroll down to see limited special offer!

This pattern will be available with a mahoosive 65% discount (Approx £1.38 / $1.50) instead of the normal £3.95 ($5.00) on Ravelry and Etsy from 12pm GMT (8am EST) on 17 July 2024 for 24hrs as part of the Christmas In July Blog Hop by Regina P Designs.
