Woolbox | Free Green Hippo Crochet Pattern

Hey folks, I’ve got another brand new FREE crochet pattern to share with you today that I’ve designed in collaboration with Woolbox. Fresh from splashing through the swamps, it’s a cute and cuddly crochet Green Hippo!

Crocheted green hippo amigurumi pattern by Keep Calm and Crochet on UK available from the Woolbox website

If you’ve not heard about Woolbox before they are a new online yarn company with a wealth of knitting and crochet knowledge. With the help of different designers, they are beginning to develop some FREE patterns of their own using their brand of yarn – and I’m delighted to be helping them out with that.

You may remember I shared the Blue Rhino, Pink Elephant and Golden Monkey amigurumi, and now we’ve got a fourth ‘Jungle Friend’ crochet pattern to make.

❤️ SAVE THE PATTERN ON RAVELRY ❤️

For my Green Hippo, I used Woolbox Imagine Classic DK (Double Knit / Light Worsted). If you aren’t familiar with this yarn, it’s a smoothly spun 100% anti-pilling acrylic; anti-pilling means that any project you make with this yarn should not ‘pill’ (go bobbly) over time.

On the left there are two images of green shades of Woolbox Imagine DK yarn, on the right we see the Green Hippo crochet amigurumi made from this yarn.

Woolbox Imagine Classic DK is available in 26 different colours (and they are adding shades all the time). I just used two different colours for my Hippo; Emerald Green (a rich, vibrant shade of green) and Evergreen (a deep rich green that resembles the foliage of fir trees) with a 3.5mm (US size E/4) hook. Other than that you would need a pair of black 12mm safety eyes, some stitch markers, some toy fillerpins and a yarn needle to sew all the pieces together.

The pattern is available for FREE from the Woolbox as just the digital download for the pattern or as a yarn kit – I’ve added the links below:

On the left there are two images of green shades of Woolbox Imagine DK yarn, on the right we see a close up of the Green Hippo crochet amigurumi pattern and kit available from Woolbox.

The pattern is written in UK terms, but shipping is available to anywhere. If you are not sure about UK terms then you might find my blog post British vs. American Crochet Terms: What’s the Difference? helpful.

If you make up the Woolbox Green Hippo I hope you will share your finished project photos with me on social media (facebookX (twitter) or instagram), or as a project on Ravelry – I love to see what you make! And finally you may wish to sign up to blog (below) and / or my mailing list to get a reminder when new blog posts, discounts or new pattern releases are available.

Until next time folks! Happy hooking and keep calm and crochet on my friends xx

Are you ready to crochet yourself a new pet? Look no further than the adorable Peaches the Pet Rabbit pattern, featured in Crochet Now issue 108! This charming project is bound to capture your heart and ignite your creativity as you craft your very own sweet companion.

Peaches the amigurumi rabbit crochet pattern by Heather C Gibbs available in issue 108 of Crochet Now magazine.

Peaches the Pet Rabbit is the epitome of crochet cuteness. With her upright ears, powder puff tail, and lovable expression, she’s sure to become a cherished member of your crochet menagerie.

I love making bunnies, in fact I think this might possibly be my 11th incarnation of crocheting a rabbit, they are definitely the animal I have crocheted the most.

I used some of my favourite Scheepjes Stone Washed for Peaches, which, if you’re not familiar with it, is a Sport weight yarn that’s made from 22% Acrylic, 78% Cotton that comes in 50g (130m) balls.

A cute crochet amigurumi peach bunny is sitting on a desk, behind her is a basket of Scheepjes Stone Washed yarn that has been used to create her.

The only other things you will need for Peaches are some stitch markers, a tapestry needle, some toy stuffing, 1 pair x 12mm kawaii safety eyes, 1 x 15mm pink flocked safety nose, some black embroidery thread, two small green buttons and a 3.5mm hook (US size E).

Crochet Now Magazine | Official Moomins Pattern

In the enchanting world of crochet, where imagination weaves into reality, there’s a special corner reserved, for folks like me, who cherish nostalgic memories. Enter the beloved Moomins, those delightful characters from Tove Jansson’s iconic stories which I have recently had the pleasure to create in crochet.

Official Moomins Crochet Pattern including Moomin Troll and Snorkmaiden - out now in issue 107 of Crochet Now magazine.
© Practical Publishing 2024 (Crochet Now Issue 107)

If you are not familiar with the Moomins they are a family of white roundish trolls with large snouts. They are the central characters in a series of novels, short stories, picture books, and a comic strip by Finnish writer and illustrator Tove Jansson,

The latest issue of Crochet Now magazine is a treasure trove of lovely seasonal patterns and inspiration, but nestled among them are two little guys that I hope will instantly transport you to Moominvalley. I had fun creating the much-loved hippopotamus-like characters; Moomin Troll and the Snork Maiden.

I used DROPS Alpaca for my Moomins as I felt it would be fitting to use a Nordic yarn. DROPS Alpaca is a 5ply / Sport weight yarn that’s made from 100% Alpaca Wool that comes in 50g (167mm) balls. It’s beautifully soft to work with and has a lovely halo on it, which I think, lent a nice ‘cuddle factor’ to the Moomins.

Close up of hands holding a wicker basket in front of an ivy backdrop. In the basket are two balls of Drops Alpaca alongside two crocheted Moomin amigurumi.

The only other things you will need for the Moomins are some stitch markers, a tapestry needle, some toy stuffing, black sewing thread, 4 x 6mm black safety eyes and a 3mm hook (closest US size D/3).

❤️ SAVE THE MOOMINS ON RAVELRY ❤️

Crochet Moomin Troll and Snorkmaiden amigurumi's are shown standing against a light blue background. Patterns available in issue 107 of Crochet Now magazine.

I think that the Moomins have a timeless appeal that can resonate with fans of all ages. They’re not just toys or decorations; they’re companions on imaginary adventures!

Issue 107 is available to buy from most supermarkets. Or if you miss the print version you can grab a digital version from www.craftstash.co.uk/books-magazines

NEW Crochet Kit | Pretty Petal Pincushion

As I sit writing this post there is a gentle breeze carrying the scent of freshly cut grass and the sun is finally casting it’s warm glow upon the earth! Spring has (finally) sprung and everywhere you look, hints of new life are emerging – buds are unfurling on branches, green shoots are peeking through the soil, and there is a promise of blossoms waiting to burst forth in a riot of colour. And what better way to celebrate than with a crochet project that captures the joy of warmer weather! Allow me to introduce the Pretty Petal Pincushion Crochet Kit – a delightful embodiment of sunshine and usefulness!

Pin It for Later:

Pinterest collage of a crochetedPretty Petals sunflower crochet kit available from KCACOUKDesign Etsy shop

Much like my other crochet kits this one was also released at the latest Crochet Sanctuary weekend where I was kindly allowed to bring a pop up shop,  to share with the other guests, a range of my KCACOUKYarnybobs and Dear Ewe products.

I’d actually had the idea for this pincushion awhile ago; pin cushions are such a invaluable tool, their primary function is to provide a convenient and safe place to store sewing needles and pins, and somewhere to keep them organised and easily accessible during projects. And I’m all for a bit of making it easier for me to find things when I need them!

Crocheted sunflower pincushion on a log slice, on a white wooden table. You can also see in the background the crochet kit for this sunflower pincushion.

Also by keeping needles and pins securely in place, pincushions can help prevent accidents such as pinpricks and misplaced needles, ensuring a smoother (and safer) crochet experience.

I wanted my pincushion to be not only practical but also aesthetically pleasing. I’ve always loved sunflowers, they even featured in my room decor; stencilling some as a border onto my bedroom walls in my teens. They are such cheerful flowers and they can effortlessly brighten up any space – perfect inspiration I thought for a pretty pincushion.

❤️ Add the Pretty Petal Pincushion Crochet Kit to your favourites on Ravelry ❤️

Crocheted sunflower pincushion on a log slice, a hand is shown putting a pin into the top of the pin cushion.

Each kit contains everything you need to make the Pretty Petal Pincushion including the pattern and the following items in a drawstring reusable organza bag;

1 ball of 10g Black Coffee (Shade 162) – YARN A
1 ball of 10g Saffron (Shade 249) – YARN B
2 balls of 10g Lemon (Shade 280) – YARN C
1 ball of 10g Forest Green (Shade 412) – YARN D
Shaped log slice stand
10g of toy stuffing

There’s an optional extra of purchasing a premium bamboo 3mm or aluminium hook (US approx. size D/3) if you don’t have one of those to hand, and also a pack of 10 Clover marking pins – which I think are great for using with amigurumi or holding crochet pieces together.

The pattern is written in UK terms, but shipping is available to anywhere. If you are not sure about UK terms then you might find my blog post British vs. American Crochet Terms: What’s the Difference? helpful.

Unfortunately, the pattern for this pincushion cannot be sold separately as it’s specifically designed to fit the unique base provided with the kit.

They Pretty Petal Pincushion kit would make a great gift for crocheters and multi crafters – get yours today and let your creativity blossom!

Simply Crochet Magazine | Zuri the Zebra

One of this years trending style is Neon! Have you considered giving it a try to bring an electrified pop to your next amigurumi project?

© Our Media Ltd 2024 – Simply Crochet Issue 148

As well as the Bear Pocket organiser (that I talked about here) I also have another pattern in issue 148 of Simply Crochet Magazine. Allow me to introduce Zuri the Zebra, a jumbo colourful amigurumi project.

Neon colours have been making a splash in the world of fashion and design, and now they’re taking the crochet world by storm. With their bold, vivid hues, neon yarns add an instant dose of excitement and energy to any project. And what better way to showcase this trend than with a larger-than-life crochet creation like Zuri the Zebra!

Close up of all the wonderful neon colours included in the mane of Zuri crocheted amigurumi zebra - available in Simply Crochet Magazine issue 148
© Our Media Ltd 2024 – Simply Crochet Issue 148

Zuri is not your average amigurumi! Standing tall and proud, at 50cm (20 inches) tall when sitting, this neon giant zebra is sure to make a statement in any room. With her striking neon stripes, she exudes a playful charm that’s impossible to resist.

Whether you’re an experienced crocheter looking for a new challenge or a beginner eager to try something bold, Zuri is the perfect project to unleash your creativity.

A collection of Scheepjes yarn is shown on a desk. A hand holds up some highlighter yellow coloured yarn and we can also see green and pink neon yarn alongside light grey and cream.

To create Zuri I used two types of Aran weight yarn for this jumbo project. The main bod colour was made from Scheepjes Truly Scrumptious Aran in Buttercream Icing, which is and 50% Polyester 50% Acrylic blended yarn available in 100g (108m) balls. It was my first time using this yarn and I was curious about it as the polyester part is made from recycled plastic bottles. I have to say I was impressed, it’s still fairly soft and there is over 80 shades to choose from, I’ll certainly be considering it for other projects.

For the bright neon accents I used Scheepjes Chunky Monkey in Hot Pink, Neon Green, Yellow and Smoke (for the hooves). I’ve used Chunky Monkey in lots of projects in the past, it’s a really versatile 100% acrylic yarn Aran weight yarn 100g (116m) balls.

The giant neon crocheted Zuri the Amigurumi Zebra is shown sitting in a grey arm chair. Pattern is available in issue 148 of Simply Crochet magazine.

Then the only other things you will need are a 5.5 (US size H/8), a pair of 24mm black safety eyes, some stitch markers, some toy filler (at least 1kg / 2lbs), pins and a yarn needle to sew all the pieces together. And if you are looking for a large project bag to keep all that I can certainly recommend my Dear Ewe Large Project or Tote bags that hold 8 or more balls of yarn comfortably.

❤️ SAVE ZURI THE ZEBRA ON RAVELRY ❤️

Not only is Zuri a delightful addition to any crochet collection, but she also makes a wonderful gift for friends and loved ones. Imagine the joy on someone’s face when they unwrap their very own giant neon giant – it’s sure to be a gift they’ll treasure for years to come.

Issue 148 of Simply Crochet Magazine is on sale from 16 April 2024 and is available to order online or download as a digital issue now.

Moorit Magazine | Equilibrium Wrap

Welcome to the enchanting world of crochet where balance and beauty converge in the exquisite latest issue of Moorit magazine pattern! Working within this issues theme of ‘balance’ I came up with the Equilibrium wrap; a unique exploration of negative and positive space.

The Equilibrium crocheted wrap shown in a beautiful spring green colour, held behind the back of a model wearing a similar colour jumpsuit.
© Moorit Magazine 2024 – Issue 6 / Amelia Claudia Photography)

About Moorit

I am delighted to feature in Moorit magazine for the first time! If you haven’t heard of Moorit before it’s an independent crochet magazine based in Scotland and run by Alyson Chu. Launched in 2021, Moorit is a high-end craft magazine with true indie spirit. It focuses on wearable, modern garments and accessories, made in natural fibres, and is akin to a stunning coffee table book with its beautiful photos and captivating content.

My design

At the heart of the Equilibrium pattern lies a delicate dance between stitches and space. I wanted the wrap to showcase a state of balance, between opposing sections of filet crochet, in an interesting and appealing design. It’s a little lacy without being too complicated but with enough coverage to ward of a cool breeze. Made in a single colour this elegant and classic easy-to-wear wrap is sure to become a wardrobe staple.

Close up of the pretty spring green Equilibrium crochet wrap by Heather C Gibbs in Issue 6 of Moorit Magazine 2024

If you’ve been around for awhile you’ll know that I love a bit of filet crochet and I think the play of solid and open spaces, adds an extra layer of depth and dimension to the Equilibrium pattern. The contrast between solid and open mesh creates a mesmerizing interplay of light and shadow, enhancing the overall elegance of the design. Each stitch is carefully placed to create a harmonious balance between negative space, where stitches recede, and positive space, where stitches stand out – that’s the beauty of filet crochet!

❤️ SAVE THE EQUILIBRIUM WRAP ON RAVELRY ❤️

The Yarn

I used Wool Decanted DK which is 100% British Wool (Polwarth / Romney & Black Shetland sheep) that comes in 50g balls (112m / 122yd per). The sample I made mine in was in colourway ‘River Thyme 001’, though it would be easy to personalise using your favourite colour.

Flatlay image of several skeins of Wool Decanted green vintage 23 DK yarn on a white wooden desk background.

The only other things you will need for this wrap are some stitch markers , a tapestry needle and a 5mm hook (US size H/8).

Final note

I hope that as you work through the Equilibrium pattern, you’ll find yourself immersed in the filet crochet technique. With each new row, you’ll witness the intricate design come to life, revealing the delicate balance between solid and open spaces.

While Equilibrium may present a challenge, as it does need a bit of concentration, I would say that the pattern is suitable for an an advanced beginner wanting to expand their crochet skills. Whether you choose to wear it as a wrap, shawl, or scarf, the finished project will effortlessly add a touch of elegance to any outfit.

As well as my wrap this issue includes some stunning designs including six garments and six accessories. So, gather your hooks and your favourite yarn, and prepare to embark on a journey of exploration and expression with the Equilibrium crochet pattern. With patience, practice, and a keen eye for detail, you’ll discover the magic of ‘balance’ in your own unique crocheted wrap.

As you may know, with the closure of Deramores, I’m slowly working my way through the old patterns I had with them to transfer them over to MY pattern shops, I’m sorry it’s taking awhile; I’m trying to get through them as and when I’ve got a bit of free time.

From their floppy ears to their powder puff tails, each bunny exudes personality and charm which could add a seasonal touch to your Easter decorations. They are very easy to personalise by picking yarn colours to match your favourite pets.

Two crocheted Dutch Bunnies amigurumi nestled in some straw - pattern available from KCACOUK Designs

I used a DK weight yarn (light worsted), and I’m suggesting Paintbox Simply DK (instead of the original Deramores Studio DK). Paintbox Simply DK  is a 100% premium acrylic yarn that comes in 100g (276m) and is available in a wide variety of colours.

I used a 3mm hook (closest US size D/3) and the colours I’ve suggested are 1 ball of Paper White (100), Soft Fudge (109), Coffee Bean (110) and a bit of Bubblegum Pink (150) for the nos., Other than that you would need two pairs of 12mm black safety eyes, some stitch markers, some toy filler, pins and a yarn needle to sew all the pieces together.

The 5 page pattern comes in either UK or US terms with full descriptions of any stitch abbreviations. It’s classed as an “easy” pattern which I’m hoping anyone new to crochet, along with more experienced crocheters will enjoy.

The pattern is now available from my usual pattern stores for you to make your own version at the links below:

Crochet Now Magazine | Official Paddington Bear

Hello! How are you all? Although it’s still cold here in the U.K we have been enjoying a couple of days of sunshine recently which has been blissful – definitely making me feel that Spring is on the way! And Spring has definitely sprung in the most recent issue of Crochet Now magazine

Front cover of Crochet Now magazine issue 105 - on sale from 29 February 2024

It’s chock full of loads of lovely seasonal patterns – and a brand new exclusive character design from me. It’s Paddington Bear! You might just be able to spy him on the front cover.

Paddington is a special bear to me; my nursery when my mum and dad brought home from hospital was Paddington Bear everything from wallpaper to bedding. And when I was a little girl some of my favourite bed-time stories were about the polite bear from Peru with a love of marmalade sandwiches.

Official Paddington Bear Crochet Pattern, complete with marmalade sandwich, red hat and blue duffel coat - out now in issue 105 of Crochet Now magazine.

As Paddington is so quintisentially British I felt it would be nice to create Paddington from British wool. Luckily the magazine agreed and we settled on West Yorkshire Spinners (WYS) which is spun in Yorkshire.

I used WYS Elements as the main ‘Paddington’ colour, it’s a DK weight yarn that’s made from 60% Lyocell, 40% Falkland Islands Wool and comes in 50g (122m) balls. Then for all of Paddington’s accessories I used WYS Bo Peep Luxury Baby DK which is 52% Falkland Wool, 48% Nylon also in 50g (112m) balls.

The only other things you will need for Paddington are some stitch markers, a tapestry needle, some toy stuffing, 2 x 8mm black safety eyes, 1 x 15mm black safety bear nose, 2 x 15mm brown wooden toggle buttons, 3 x small press studs and a 3.5mm hook (US size E).
