Inside Crochet 177 | Chevron Neck Tie

Helloo!! How’s it going? I feel like everything is a bit crazy here at the minute, and I’m trying to rectify my tardiness in sharing what I’ve been up to lately! I’m absolutely thrilled to share that I’m back in Inside Crochet Magazine, this time with a chic Chevron Neck Tie pattern in Issue 177!

A copy of Inside Crochet Magazine open to the page featuring the chevron neck tie design, placed on a table. The original crochet tie is draped nearby.

Small crochet and knit ties have been popping up everywhere lately, and I’m so happy to be a part of the buzz! These little beauties are not only stylish but also practical. Whether you’re packing for a mini break or just adding a quirky touch to your everyday outfits, these sorts of ties are perfect for any occasion.

But back to my own Chevron Neck Tie! It was designed with a Parisian mini break in mind – imagine pairing it with a simple shirt, a cosy jumper, or even throwing on a beret for that perfect blend of handmade charm and French-inspired style. It’s one of those pieces that you can easily throw into your weekend bag for a touch of personality, and it’s just so versatile.

I made my scarf nice and long so that you can wrap it round your neck, though it would be fairly easy to adjust this pattern by taking out some rows (each side mirrors each other so you’d just need to take out the same number of rows on each side.

The Chevron Neck Tie was designed with Yarnsmiths Merino DK; (100% merino wool) 50g/110m/120yds, which is a gorgeously soft yarn to work with. It’s not a yarn I’d used before but I feel that I’ll be using it again in the future for projects.

Yarnsmiths Merino DK is available in SOOOO many gorgeous colours. The scarf is actually a great project to get creative with different shades – I used four different colours but you could make it with as little as one or two.

A close-up of four balls of Yarnsmiths merino yarn; the rich and vibrant colours used to create my chevron neck tie design.

The only other things you will need to make the scarf are maybe some stitch markers to help mark the beginning and end of each row and a tapestry needle.

I loved how this project turned out; if you’re looking to add a bit of handmade flair to your wardrobe then go grab your copy of Inside Crochet Magazine Issue 177.

Merry Marble Cowl | The MAL Reveal & Pattern Release

The time has come, my crochet friends, to reveal the finished design for the Merry Marbles Makealong (MAL)! I’ve been bursting with excitement to share this colourful project, and now it’s finally here. Although the MAL was designed with fun and vibrant holiday vibes in mind, I think the cowl would be perfect for anytime of the year – in fact I’m already planning on making another one!

Pin for later:

Collage for Pinterest showcasing the Merry Marbles make-a-long, featuring images of completed rainbow cowl.

For those that weren’t aware this latest make-along was a collaboration between myself, Kitey, aka The Yarn Whisperer, and Mrs G Makes and was designed to be a perfect pop of colour for your winter wardrobe.

The Merry Marbles Cowl is a cosy yet lightweight accessory that combines playful stitches with a cheerful, rainbow design. It’s simple enough for adventurous beginners but has enough detail to keep seasoned crocheters entertained. Plus, the funnel shaped design ensures maximum warmth, making it as practical as it is pretty.

As always it’s been an absolute delight to work with Kitey and his gorgeously coloured yarn, I love these collabs we do – it always provides me with an opportunity to work with gorgeous yarn which in turn makes the design process super enjoyable.

The yarn choice for the Merry Marbles was a lovely mix of rainbow shades (red, purple, blue, green, yellow and orange) alongside a large 100g skein of sparkly natural yarn. The photos don’t do that twinkle justice, it’s just lovely and who doesn’t love a bit of sparkle in the festive season (or at anytime)!

Collage featuring hand-dyed yarn inspired by toy marbles, with skeins of undyed sparkly cream, and vibrant mini skeins of rainbow tones.

Kitey perfectly captured some excitingly vivid shades for the rainbow that were a joy to work with, and of course you didn’t have to use the colours as a rainbow you could place them in any order you wish.

Also in the kit, as always, were the cutest crochet accessories from the fabulous Mrs G Makes. Continuing the marbles theme Amanda created the sweetest set of ‘marble’ stitch markers which were such a useful tool when making this cowl.

Close-up of three stitch markers from the Mischievous Magpie make-a-long kit: beautiful bright beads that catches the light with a subtle shimmer like a toy marble, adding a playful touch to each crochet project.

Although the official end date of the MAL has come to an end DO NOT feel any panic or worry that you didn’t keep up or haven’t even started yet. The deadline was there just for those people that like a deadline, for everyone else, enjoy it when you have the time to use the yarn and / or make the shawlette – there is no rush to this crochet makealong! And sometime in the future you will have a beautiful finished object that you can gift for someone special or to enjoy yourself.

And of course it makes us all incredibly happy to see YOUR photos of the various stages of progress you make with your projects on social media – and I hope you will continue to do so as you finish your cowls’ if you haven’t had chance to make it or finish it off yet.

❤️ SAVE MERRY MARBLES COWL ON RAVELRY ❤️

Now that the MAL is over, I have listed the pattern in my usual pattern stores for you to make your own version of the Merry Marbles Cowl:

I would suggest 7 different colours and at least 220g would work best; e.g. 100g of cream, 6 x 20g of rainbow or different colours with a 3.5mm (Closest US size E/4) hook. The pattern includes a written version with supporting charts, detailed stitch explanations, and is available in both UK and US terminology.

We do hope that you’ve enjoyed this fun make-along, I know Kitey, Amanda and I have thoroughly enjoyed it!

Sassy Sardines Summer Makealong

In our 9th collaboration we’ll dive into a splash of colour and creativity with the Sassy Sardines Cowl – a fun and vibrant crochet adventure perfect for brightening up your wardrobe. Packed with a playful design and cheerful vibes, this project is all about celebrating the sunny season with a community of like-minded makers. Whether you’re a seasoned pro or new to the craft, grab your hooks and join the fun as we stitch up some serious summer sass!

And I’m just going to say for our 10th collaboration (Winter 2025) we are already planning something truly epic that you won’t want to miss out on!

Crochet Now Magazine | Sakura Season

Spring is just around the corner, and what better way to celebrate the change of seasons than with a new issue of Crochet Now! Issue 117, bringing fresh inspiration, including two of my latest designs: the Soft Swirl Cowl and Suki the Sakura Doll. Both projects are perfect for adding a touch of softness and beauty to your crochet hook this season.

The Soft Swirl Cowl elegantly worn by a model against a sunny yellow background in *Crochet Now* issue 117, highlighting its delicate floral stitches and three contrasting shades in stunning detail.

Soft Swirl Cowl

If you love delicate textures and stylish accessories, then the Soft Swirl Cowl is a must-make for your spring wardrobe. Designed to be lightweight yet cosy, this cowl features a subtle floral stitch pattern that creates a beautiful sense of movement. It’s one of those accessories that looks effortlessly elegant while being practical for those slightly chilly spring days.

I chose a yarn that enhances the softness and drape of the design, making it a pleasure to wear and crochet. I used Yarnsmiths Merino Soft, with a 3mm hook (closest US size D/3). which is 4ply (fingering weight) yarn that comes in 100g (400m) balls. It’s a 25% Nylon, 75% Wool blend which is super nice yarn to crochet with as it’s lovely and soft – it’s a yarn I think I’ll definitely look at using again.

Whether you opt for a neutral shade to keep things classic or a pastel hue to embrace the season, this cowl is a versatile piece that will quickly become a staple in your handmade collection.

Suki the Sakura Doll

Sakura season is a time of renewal, beauty, and celebration—just like Suki the Sakura Doll! This adorable amigurumi doll is inspired by the delicate cherry blossoms that bloom each spring. With her sweet kimono-inspired outfit and tiny blossom details, Suki is a charming addition to any crochet collection.

For Suki I used some of my favourite Ricorumi DK yarn, with a 3.25mm hook, which, if you’re not familiar with it, is a 100% cotton yarn that comes in 25g (57.5m) balls. It’s one of my absolute favourites! With 80 solid shades to choose from, it’s perfect for amigurumi, offering a fantastic range of colours.

The only other things you will need for this project are;

I had so much fun designing Suki, from shaping her traditional-style dress to adding the finishing touches that make her truly special. My sister-in-law is actually Japanese and she wore the most beautiful kimono at our wedding, and she’s talked about enjoying ‘hanami’, which is the practice of enjoying the beauty of the cherry blossoms.

Whether you’re a seasoned amigurumi maker or just starting out, Suki is a delightful project to work on. She also makes a wonderful gift for anyone who loves Japan, cherry blossoms, or simply cute handmade dolls!

Crochet Now | Winter Owl & Beanie Bonus

Hello my lovelies! Just whilst we are still in the festive season I wanted to share my latest creations featured in Crochet Now magazine, issue 115. Winter magic takes flight with my Woodsy the Winter Owl design, a charming and cuddly companion perfect for cosying up your home during the colder months.

Woodsy the Winter Owl Crochet Pattern © Practical Publishing 2024 (Crochet Now Issue 114)
© Practical Publishing 2024 (Crochet Now Issue 115)

This chunky yarn owl is showcasing frosty vibes with whimsical details to match. Whether perched on a mantle or nestled in some cushions this owl brings a touch of winter woodland charm wherever it lands. I had so much fun creating this design, and I hope it inspires you to stitch up a snowy scene of your own.

For my owl I used Yarnsmiths Chenille Chunky, 1 ball each in Vanilla Fudge 5067 (MC), Blush 5062 (CC1), Tropical Teal 5229 (CC2) & Aqua 5224 (CC3) and 1 ball of Yarnsmiths Pebble Haze DK 1 ball in both yarns exclusively available from www.woolwarehouse.co.uk. Both of the Yarnsmiths yarns were new to me, though I’d seen them advertised, and I was excited to give them a try.

A soft and cuddly crochet owl made with chenille yarn, perched on a tree branch. The owl is made with cuddly chenille yarn and is surrounded by a wintery backdrop of frosted leaves and bare twigs.

Yarnsmiths Chenille Chunky yarn is luxuriously soft, with a plush texture that’s perfect for creating cosy and tactile projects like winter accessories or cuddly plushies. And I really liked the Yarnsmiths Pebble Haze DK which is another beautifully soft yarn with a gentle ombré effect, I think I would definitely use that again for other projects.

The only other things you will need for Woodsy are; some stitch markers, toy stuffing, a large eye tapestry needle and 2 x 30mm offset glitter safety eyes.

But that’s not all for this issue! I also had the privilege of collaborating with Crochet Now and KnitPro to bring you an extra-special pattern in the magazine’s supplement. The result? An embroidered Bloom & Grow beanie hat that’s both stylish and practical. The hat features simple embroidery techniques to add a touch of personality to a winter essential—an ideal project for those who love blending crochet with other crafty skills.

For my hat I used Symfonie Yarns by KnitPro – Viva which is a vibrant, soft yarn with a striking palette of bold colour combinations – some of which I used for the embroidery. The yarn comes in 100g balls and is made from 100% Merino wool so is very nice to work with; perfect for statement pieces and eye-catching accessories.

New Crochet Pattern Release | Gnome Sweet Gnome Advent Calendar

Hello, lovelies! If there’s one thing I absolutely adore, it’s Christmas! The festive season is a time of joy, magic, and of course, crochet. This year, I had the pleasure of sharing something extra special at The Crochet Sanctuary – my Gnome Sweet Gnome Advent. It’s a delightful crochet advent project filled with festive fun, and I’m so excited to tell you all about it!

Crochet gnome advent calendar hanging on a white door, featuring a cheerful gnome figure with numbered pockets on its body for each day of December, ready to be filled with small surprises. The gnome has a tall hat, a white beard, and a festive, handmade charm

For those of you unfamiliar with The Crochet Sanctuary, let me fill you in! It’s a luxurious crochet retreat set in the stunning Cranage Hall in Cheshire. The hosts, Lisa and Lynda-Rose, always plan the most amazing weekends for their guests, and when it’s the weekend near to Christmastime, they take things up a festive notch.

I was so thrilled to be asked to lead a workshop again; the Crochet Sanctuary is one of my favourite places, and the people I’ve met there over the years have become such wonderful friends. As before Lisa and Lynda had given me carte blanche to do what I wanted for the design, all they knew was that it was going to be some sort of crochet advent calendar.

I always like to try and do something a little different, and initially had lots of ideas of what I could do but finally settle on the Gnome Sweet Gnome Advent Calendar. Picture this: a cosy, charming gnome hanging in your home, ready to count down the days to Christmas with you. Each day, a pocket holds a little surprise, making it a fun and interactive way to celebrate the holiday season. Not only is it a wonderful decoration, but it also makes for a fantastic family tradition.

A festive gnome lies on a desk, surrounded by a Christmas greenery branch and scattered wooden numbers, creating a cozy and rustic holiday scene.

I wanted my advent to not be too overtly ‘Christmassy’ for those that didn’t really celebrate the season, so I picked what I thought were the Scandi type colours of grey and red – and I thought who wouldn’t like to start the day with a little treat throughout December.

To make my calendar I used a 3.5mm hook (US size E/4), for the ‘calendar’ part of the wall hanging I used Sidar Stories DK in a lovely bright red (shade date night 808), Sidar Stories DK is a lovely cotton rich blended yarn that I’ve used before; it’s a 60% cotton and 40% acrylic. It comes in 50g balls (140m) and is a soft yarn which holds it’s stitches well. Then for the gnome I used Sidar Happy Cotton DK which comes in sweet little 20g balls (43m) and is available in 50 different shades and I used four different colours; 774 Stomp, 789 Lippy, 773 Sandcastle and 761 Dolly.

A close-up shot showcasing the different yarns used in the Gnome Sweet Gnome advent calendar project, with various festive colours visible. Wooden advent buttons, a hook, scissors and stitch markers are arranged neatly, adding a rustic, decorative charm to the scene.

Then the only other things you would need are some stitch markers, a tapestry needle, some toy stuffing, a 30cm dowel rod, some string and some advent buttons or beads to mark the days. I used these Wooden Advent Buttons from Etsy, but there are other options available from places like Amazon like these Wooden gift tags or these advent pin badges, or these from Craftwood Creations.

The pattern is a nice one to do with a fairly simple pattern repeat once you get into the swing of things and you can choose to make the pockets as you go or add them all at the end. Then the only other techniques incorporated are increases and decrease placed at strategic points to create the gnome features. I would say that this pattern is suitable for adventurous beginner crocheters, offering an exciting opportunity to explore new stitches and techniques while creating a fun piece of Christmas decor.

The top of the festive gnome, with its pointed hat and white beard, is displayed against a backdrop of lush green ivy, creating a whimsical and natural holiday vibe.

It was such a pleasure to see everyone’s gnomes come to life at the sanctuary. The workshop was filled with chatter, laughter, and a whole lot of yarn. By the end of the weekend, the room was bursting with festive cheer and some incredibly cute gnomes were underway! And of course, what’s Christmas without a little gnome punning fun? They were totally sleigh-ing it!

There were gnome-where near enough hours in the day to crochet all the festive cuteness we wanted, including the wonderful pair of festive socks and a wonderfully cute light up Christmas tree that we also had as projects. But I love that everyone walked away with their own unique creation and a bit of gnome magic to add to their holiday décor.

Close-up of the top section of a crochet gnome advent calendar against a white door, highlighting the gnome's tall, pointed hat, white beard, and large friendly nose. Small, numbered pockets begin beneath the face, inviting holiday surprises.

So if you’re looking for a project that’s full of festive spirit, the Gnome Sweet Gnome Advent will bring a smile to your face every day in December. It’s the perfect way to add a handmade touch to the most wonderful time of the year. You can find the full pattern available in my pattern stores – it’s the ultimate countdown to Christmas with a gnome-filled twist.

Featured in Crochet Now magazine issue 114, the Sugarplum Beary is ready to be the next addition to your seasonal projects.

A cute bear dressed as a sugarplum fairy stands proudly in a festive scene. The bear wears a delicate tutu, a shimmering tiara, and tiny ballet slippers, with glittery wings adding a magical touch. Around it, twinkling fairy lights, frosted ornaments, and festive garlands create a cosy holiday atmosphere. The bear holds a tiny wand, as if ready to sprinkle some holiday magic.

For the Sugarplum Beary I used some of my favourite Ricorumi DK yarn which, if you’re not familiar with it, is a 100% cotton yarn that comes in 25g (57.5m) balls. It’s one of my absolute favourites! With 80 solid shades to choose from, it’s perfect for amigurumi, offering a fantastic range of colours.

For her colour scheme it of course was inspired by sugarplum tones so lots of purples, pinks and magenta and of course a lovely bit of sparkle!

I combined this with some Ricorumi Twinkly Twinkly which is a new yarn that I was excited to try. It’s like Ricorumi but with a lovely bit of metallic thread running through it – perfect for my little magical fairy bear. The only other things you will need for this project are;

Pattern Re-release | Poppy Appeal 2024

Back in 2020 I was honoured to be asked to create an official Royal British Legion (RBL) crochet poppy design for Deramores. With the closure of Deramores (in Feb 2022) I’ve been slowly working my way through any associated patterns to add to my pattern shops, however as this was a pattern was originally designed in collaboration with a charity it’s been a bit of a different task to sort out.

Pin for later:

A collage of a range of crochet poppies. Finished crochet poppy is bright red with a black centre, perfect as a remembrance piece or handmade accessory.

The poppy is a well-known and well-established symbol, one that carries a wealth of history and meaning with it. It’s a symbol of both remembrance and hope for a peaceful future. Personally it always makes me think of my Granddad who fought in World War 2.

I’ve thought about the best way to move forward with this pattern and this is what I have come up with. This poppy pattern will cost £2.50 (approx. $3.05) and will be available in all of my pattern stores (see links below).

Close-up of a handmade crochet poppy brooch pinned to the front pocket of denim dungarees. The vibrant red petals and dark centre of the poppy stand out against the blue denim, adding a delicate, handmade touch to the outfit.

For the sake of the re-release and transparency for every purchase made I will donate 100% of the RRP to the Royal British Legion to support the Armed Forces community. My time for setting up the PDFs, any pattern admin, platform fees and adding the patterns to the pattern store I’ll be doing free of charge. Totals will be totted up yearly and any amounts will go directly to the Royal British Legion.

In the new update, I’ve included step-by-step photos for the poppy pattern to make it even easier to follow along! These visuals will guide you through each stage of the process, helping you see exactly how your project should look as it comes together. Whether you’re a beginner or just need a little extra guidance, these photos will take you through the details, ensuring a smoother and more enjoyable crochet experience.

A hand holds a crochet poppy brooch, in the background are many crocheted poppies.

For your poppies you can use any weight yarn but I would recommend a DK (Light worsted weight yarn), such as Paintbox Simply DK in Rose Red, Grass Green and Pure Black, 3.25mm (US size D/3) hook. For reference an average sized 100g (276m / 302yds) ball of red yarn you can easily make about 20 poppies.

There’s no wrong way to wear a poppy, you could glue gun them to a headband, wreath, blanket or cushion, or just add a brooch pin, to honour and remember the service and the sacrifice of those within the Armed Forces. And if like me, you’re wearing a poppy from a previous year, you can make sure you still go and donate a couple of quid to such a worthy charity.

A small child’s hand holds a single handmade crochet poppy, showcasing its bright red petals and dark center. Surrounding the hand is a mass of other crochet poppies, creating a vibrant display of red blooms in various sizes, each with intricate detailing.

I Like Crochet Magazine | Frosted Forest Houndstooth Wrap

As we cosy up for the winter season, I’m thrilled to share my latest project: the Frosted Forest Houndstooth Wrap, a beautiful addition to any winter wardrobe that’s as stylish as it is comfortable. Featured in the December edition of I Like Crochet magazine, this wrap brings together a classic houndstooth stitch pattern with a modern frosty colour scheme that’s perfect for colder months.

Houndstooth is one of those timeless patterns that I think always adds a touch of sophistication, and this wrap is no exception. The Frosted Forest Houndstooth Wrap combines contrasting tones to create that bold, traditional checkered effect while still feeling soft and subtle. With a gorgeous drape and enough length to wrap yourself up comfortably, it’s ideal for layering over your favourite winter outfits, whether you’re heading out for a brisk winter walk or curling up with a book by the fire.

I used Scheepjes Colour Crafter for this wrap; it’s a yarn I’ve used for many projects and it never disappoints! This DK (light worsted) yarn is a premium 100% acrylic (328 yarns [300mters] / 100g) that’s wonderfully soft with a smooth, even texture. Plus, it’s hypoallergenic, making it perfect for clothing and wraps that need to be both snug and gentle on the skin.

Three balls of yarn in soft hues sit on a table top surrounded by crochet notions, a small potted plant, and a steaming cup of tea, creating a cosy crafting scene.

One of my favourite things about this pattern is the soothing rhythm of crocheting the houndstooth design, it’s repetitive enough to be a relaxing experience — perfect for an evening by the fire with a cup of tea. The houndstooth pattern is created through simple colour changes, so if you’ve been wanting to dip your toes into colorwork, this is a fabulous project to try – a great pattern for beginners.

The wrap pairs well with neutral outfits and works wonders with winter whites and forest greens, embracing the essence of a snowy woodland. For those who love a bit of a twist on classic style, the houndstooth design here is a fantastic way to make a statement without overwhelming your look.

The Frosted Forest Houndstooth Wrap is styled as a long, cozy scarf around a mannequin, set against a lush background of ivy. The classic houndstooth pattern contrasts beautifully with the greenery, enhancing the wrap’s warm texture and elegant drape.

If you’re already subscribed to I Like Crochet, you can find the Frosted Forest Houndstooth Wrap in their current issue. It’s a project that will not only elevate your crochet skills but will also add a stunning piece to your winter collection. And for those new to houndstooth, this wrap is a perfect introduction to this classic pattern.

If you haven’t heard of  I Like Crochet magazine before it’s a US bi-monthly digital magazine which is published by the creators of AllFreeCrochet.com. With it being a US publication patterns are written using US crochet terminology – if you are not sure how that differs you may find my post British vs. American Crochet Terms: What’s the difference? of use.
