Crochet Hygge Blog Hop for a Cosy Autumn

The days are getting shorter, the evenings cooler, and Iโ€™m absolutely ready to pull up a favourite chair, wrap myself in yarny goodness and indulge in that cosy, content-feeling known as hygge. If you know me, you know I believe in the power of hooking to help make the world slow down for a short time.

A collage featuring 24 cozy crochet patterns, including scarves, hats, and home decor items, with a knit background and text reading 'CROCHET HYGGE BUNDLE' and '24 Cozy Crochet Patterns for HEART and HOME'. Curated by Green Fox Farms Designs.

Thatโ€™s why Iโ€™m so excited to join this yearโ€™s Hygge blog-hop, curated by Green Fox Farm Designs, to celebrate all things handcrafted comfort. The hop is here to emphasise the warmth, the calm, the slower rhythms of life, and of course the loveliest crochet patterns to match.

Why Hygge + Crochet = Perfect Match

The word hygge (Scandinavian in origin) evokes that feeling of cosiness, comfort and contentment, and what better way to honour it than with a crochet hook in hand, yarn under your fingers, and the world outside slipping away in mindful quiet as you stitch. Itโ€™s perfect for this season when blankets, cushions, cowls and warm wraps become our friends.

For three weeks we will be hopping between different crochet blogs and different designers to gather up a whole lot of satisfying makes and (for a limited time only) free crochet patterns.

A collage of crocheted items celebrating the Hygge Blog Hop, featuring scarves, blankets, and cozy accessories, with text overlay that reads 'CROCHET HYGGE BLOG HOP' and dates 'November 3 - 25'.

Think squishy blankets, textured scarves, warm beanies, amigurumi, mug rugs, and other little comforts that help you slow down and breathe during the holiday rush. Every day, the crochet hygge pattern will be available as a free PDF download for 24 hours only.

Free Crochet Pattern | Utopia Neutral Pumpkin

Iโ€™m so excited to share my latest free pattern, created in collaboration with Utopia Crafts – a wonderful yarn company based in Exeter, Devon.

A neutral crocheted pumpkin next to two white pumpkins on a mantel, surrounded by home decor items.

Established in 2019, Utopia Crafts have developed a wide range of yarns in diverse colours and weights, all thoughtfully created to meet the needs of their customers.

For this project, I fell head over heels with their Country Wool Aran – a 80% Acrylic, 20% Wool yarn spun in a classic Aran (worsted) weight. Itโ€™s beautifully soft yet structured, and I knew straight away it would be perfect for a neutral pumpkin idea I had.

I used a single ball of the Country Wool Aran with a 5mm (US size H/8) hook and it makes quite a large sized pumpkin. The finished size of mine was 57 cm [22.4″] diameter x 11.5 cm [4.5″] high.

A collection of crocheted and real pumpkins in neutral tones displayed on a black surface, alongside a ball of Country Wool Aran yarn.

The only other things you need to complete your pumpkin are;

So, why neutral pumpkins?

While bright orange will always have a special place in autumn dรฉcor, neutral tones, think soft creams, oatmeals, greys, and taupes to bring a timeless, rustic elegance to your home. The great thing is that those colours will work beautifully with most interior style, and theyโ€™re subtle enough to keep on display well beyond October.

Pin it for Later:

Crocheted neutral pumpkins in various colors, including beige, white, yellow, and orange, arranged on a dark surface.

And because itโ€™s an Aran weight yarn, this pattern works up super quickly, you can make a pumpkin (or a whole patch of them!) in no time at all. Itโ€™s the ideal project for a cosy autumn evening. Beginners will hopefully find this pattern approachable, while more seasoned crocheters can appreciate the opportunity to relax with a project that doesnโ€™t require intense concentration.

That said there are loads of beautiful shades of Country Wool Aran so you could make pumpkins any colours you would like – I can’t wait to see what you come up with.

๐Ÿงถ The free pattern is available now from the Utopia Crafts website.

Donโ€™t forget to tag me and @utopiacrafts when you share your pumpkins โ€” I canโ€™t wait to see your creations! ๐Ÿค

Pattern Re-Release | Patchwork Braid Pillow

Iโ€™m so excited to re-introduce you with a design that I made 4 years ago now – the Patchwork Braid Pillow! Whether youโ€™re sprucing up a favourite armchair or adding a finishing touch to your sofa, this cushion cover is all about texture, charm, and that handmade feel.

Pin for Later:

A light green crochet pillow with a textured patchwork braid design, displayed on a beige couch.

Originally published in Simply Crochet, Issue 117 as the Cabled Cushion, this design has reclaimed its full title, the Patchwork Braid Pillow, because the name captures both the braided stitchwork and the patchwork-inspired block play that define the piece.

This crocheted cushion cover combines braided stitches and patchwork-style twisted blocks for a look thatโ€™s both timeless and on-trend. Swap in soft neutrals for a calm, cosy vibe, or go bold with contrasting brights – either way, youโ€™ll end up with a statement piece thatโ€™s uniquely yours.

A textured green crochet pillow with a braided stitch pattern, featuring wooden buttons, resting on a neutral-colored sofa.

๐Ÿงถ Why I Love This Design

  • Room to Customize – Want it square or rectangular? Bigger or smaller? All one side or both? The pattern lets you adapt.
  • Texture & Depth – The braided crochet stitches bring a sculptural 3D effect, catching light and shadow in a way flat crochet panels just canโ€™t.
  • Colour Play – The patchwork-style shifts give you freedom to mix and match โ€” use leftovers, go tonal, or make it bold.
  • Function & Form – Itโ€™s not just pretty โ€” itโ€™s built to last. The stitches are sturdy and the structure holds up well to use and gives real cushion-y comfort.

I made the Patchwork Braid Pillow with 6 balls of Cygnet Chunky yarn and a 5.5 mm (US size I) hook hook, in Willow (shade 515), which is a sort of greyish-greeny sage type shade thatโ€™s just so pretty. Then the only other things you’ll need are a 1 x 50 x 50cm / 20โ€ณ x 20โ€ณ cushion inner6 x 3cm wooden buttons and some stitch markers.

Pattern Re-Release | Perfectly Plaid Basket

Hey there, crochet friends! Iโ€™m so excited to re-introduce the Perfectly Plaid Basket to you. The perfect way to add instant charm and elegance to your living room – with a cosy, colour-worked creation.

Pin for Later:

Image of the Perfectly Plaid Basket crochet pattern featuring a red and black plaid design, with leather handles and a label detailing materials and skill level.

The Perfectly Plaid Basket was originally featured in the October 2021 issue of I Like Crochet magazine as a way to help keep your home feeling snug and stylish.

This classic crochet basket features bold buffalo plaid and sleek leather handles, making it as stylish as it is practical. Whether youโ€™re corralling washcloths on the bathroom counter, stashing yarn by your favourite chair, or filling it with pinecones for a rustic centrepiece, this basket brings cosy lodge vibes to any space.

A crocheted basket featuring a bold buffalo plaid pattern in red and black, with sleek leather handles, surrounded by pinecones on a wooden surface.
ยฉ I Like Crochet 2021

The design itself is a simple combination of stitches, however I wanted to play around with the traditional buffalo plaid โ€˜squaresโ€™ design. I still wanted it to be recognisable as โ€˜plaidโ€™ but I wanted the design to by more inspired by than directly copied. So I decided to go with repeating rectangles that I would create by colour changing as I worked.

This basket is made by holding two strands of Rico Design Creative Cotton Aran yarn together, with a 5.5 mm (US size I) hook, creating a sturdy, durable fabric, and is worked in continuous rounds. The only tricky part is managing multiple colours at once, but once you find your rhythm, it all comes together beautifully.

Stretch Your Stash: How Affordable Premium Yarns Can Make Your Hand-Dyed Treasures Shine

If youโ€™re a yarn lover like me, you probably have a few (or more than a few!) hand-dyed skeins tucked away – those beautiful, one-of-a-kind colours that feel too special to use without just the right project. But hereโ€™s the secret: pairing those precious skeins with affordable premium yarns can not only make them go further, but also make them stand out more than ever!

PIN FOR LATER:

A flat lay featuring various hand-dyed yarn skeins in soft pastel colors, alongside neutral-toned yarn, a notebook, and writing utensils, with a title overlay promoting yarn usage tips.

Whether you’re creating a shawl, a sweater, or even socks, combining your hand-dyed yarns with high-quality basics lets you get creative without blowing your budget – or leaving those treasures languishing in the stash.

Thereโ€™s just something about mixing a plain, solid yarn with a colourful one that makes my heart happy; especially when that colourful yarn is a gorgeous hand-dyed skein. I find the contrast really lets the colours shine without feeling overwhelming, and itโ€™s a combo Iโ€™ve come back to again and again in my designs. Just look at my little collage below – I think it really shows how much I love playing with that balance!

A collage of various crocheted shawls and scarves displayed on mannequins and models, showcasing different colors and patterns, with a logo that reads 'Keep Calm & Crochet On UK'.

Why Mix and Match?

  • Stretch Your Yardage โ€“ Instead of needing four or five skeins of hand-dyed yarn for a project, you might only need one or two if paired with a coordinating base.
  • Let It Pop โ€“ A semi-solid or speckled hand-dyed skein can shine as a feature when combined with a neutral or tonal companion yarn.
  • Balance Cost and Beauty โ€“ High-quality commercial yarns often come in at a lower price point, giving you more freedom to plan larger projects.
  • Create Contrast and Texture โ€“ Mixing yarns with slightly different textures or sheens can add real visual interest to your work.
  • Make Bigger Projects More Accessible โ€“ Want to make a hand-dyed yarn blanket or sweater? Using affordable companion yarns lets you scale up your projects without blowing your whole bank balance.

PIN FOR LATER:

A graphic featuring tips for selecting affordable yarns to pair with hand-dyed skeins, set against a textured beige background.

What to Look For in Companion Yarns

When choosing affordable yarns to pair with your hand-dyed skeins, look for:

  • A similar fibre content (especially important for blocking and drape)
  • A matching yarn weight (you can usually find this information on the ball band)
  • A neutral or complimentary colour that enhances, rather than competes with, your feature skein (greys, beiges, creams and whites neutrals and it personal preference for complimentary)
  • Reliable qualityโ€”soft enough for your project, durable enough to wear

Crochet Now 125 | Three Spooky Projects

Get ready for a hook-full of fun! Inside issue 125 of Crochet Now magazine, youโ€™ll find not one, not two, but three of my latest designs to keep your crochet hooks busy this Autumn.

Scaring is caring! ๐ŸŽƒโœจ On the run up to spooky season what better way to celebrate than with two new Carebear keyring patterns to add a little cuteness (and maybe a tiny scare!) to your makes? I’ve mentioned before how I love Carebears, and I always jump at the opportunity to create them in crochet.

These keyrings are perfect for hooking up quickly – think last-minute Halloween gifts, treats for trick-or-treaters, or just a way to add a little seasonal cheer to your own bag or keys. Whether you love the bold and bright colours of the Carebears or prefer something a little moodier for October, you can customise them to fit your spooky style.

For both of my Carebears I used Crochet Society Confection DK (Light worsted weight #3) which is anti-pilling 100% acrylic yarn that comes in 100g balls [210m] in a range of colours. I paired the Crochet Society Confection DK with a 3.25mm crochet hook (US D/3), then the only other things you would need for to complete your project are:

But thatโ€™s not all โ€“ in issue 125 you can also find the Spooktail the Cat who is ready for his favourite night of the year! ๐Ÿˆโ€โฌ›โœจ Spooktail is all dressed up and ready to show off his brand-new Halloween costume to all his friends. Heโ€™s mischievous, magical, and just a little bit spooky – everything you need for a purrfect seasonal project. And the best bit? Spooktailโ€™s ghost costume actually GLOWS in the dark!

For Spooktail I used Yarnsmiths Pebble Haze DK (Light worsted weight #3) which is a 67%ย Cotton, 33%ย Acrylic blended yarn that comes in 50g [145m] balls. Pebble Haze DK is a soft and beautiful yarn, in a range of shades inspired by nature’s beaches, pebbles and stones, I really like the effect it produces and can see me using it again in future projects.

Then I used Yarnsmiths Glow which is magic yarn that works by absorbing UV light energy (from either natural sunlight or artificial light) and slowly releasing it in the form of visible light. This photoluminescence means that the longer you expose the yarn to light, the longer it will glow for. Science aside it is such a fun yarn! It’s classed as an Aran (Worsted Weight #4) and is made from 100%ย Polyester.

I paired the yarns with a 3.5mm crochet hook (US E/4), then the only other things you would need for to complete your project are:

So grab your favourite yarn, a cosy blanket, and maybe a pumpkin-spiced treat or two – itโ€™s time to crochet your way through to spooky season with Issue 125!

This budget-friendly publication comes from the same creative team behind Crochet Now, Your Crochet and Knitting and Crochet Society, so you know itโ€™s going to be packed with inspiration. Each issue is brimming with loads of differentย patterns, covering everything from cosy garments and stylish accessories to snuggly blankets and cute toys.ย

One of my favourite things about Crochet Made Simple is that it brings back some fantastic patterns from their archives – perfect for those of us who may have missed them the first time around. And hereโ€™s the part Iโ€™m most excited about: my own pattern, Ghoulie the Ghost, will be featured in the next issue! If you didnโ€™t get a chance to make him before, nowโ€™s your moment to bring this cute and and spooky cushion to life.

For Ghoulie I used some Yarnsmiths Create Super Chunky, which was a new yarn to me. Itโ€™s a very squishy super chunky weight yarn thatโ€™s made from 100% Acrylic in 100g (80m) balls which helps make Ghoulie โ€˜hauntinglyโ€™ cute and โ€˜boo-tifullyโ€™ soft!

Standing at 70cm /27.5 inches tall the only other things you will need for Ghoulie are;

๐Ÿ‘ป SAVE GHOULIE THE GHOST CUSHION ON RAVELRYย ๐Ÿ‘ป

A collection of Yarnsmiths Create Super Chunky yarn in various colours including white, orange, yellow, pink, purple, and black, displayed with their labels facing up.

Bookish Stitches: Julyโ€™s Book Blanket Progress

Time for an update on my 2025 Crochet Book Blanket project. July has brought some truly great reads, and Iโ€™m loving how each one inspires a new square – and with my reads for this month it takes me up to 50 books read and 100 squares made so far!

Pin for later:

A collage of book covers and crochet squares representing the July progress of a Book Blanket project, featuring titles like 'Do Not Disturb', 'Room', 'We Solve Murders', 'Nine Perfect Strangers', 'The Widow's Husband's Secret Lie', 'Three Wishes,' 'The Tenant'', and 'Home Stretch'.

I wondered if the square-making might start to feel like a chore, but it hasnโ€™t at all, in fact, Iโ€™m really enjoying the mindfulness that comes with following an easy, relaxing pattern.

Recap of my Vision for the Book Afghan

To maintain cohesion, Iโ€™ve used the same block pattern for the entire afghan (grab the free pattern here), working with yarn from my stash and selecting colours that reflect the bookโ€™s cover design. The ultimate goal? A warm, meaningful blanket that doubles as a literary keepsake.

Hereโ€™s what I accomplished in July:

  • Total Books Read: and Squares Completed: 8 books read / 16 squares made

July Reads and Squares

Book 43: The Tennant by Frieda McFadden

My Rating: โญโญโญ3.5 stars (out of 5)

Synopsis: The Tenant by Freida McFadden is a psychological thriller about Blake, a man who rents out a room in his home to cover bills after losing his job. His new tenant, Whitney, seems perfect until strange and disturbing things begin happening. As the tension escalates, Blake realises Whitney may be hiding dark secrets – and that trusting her could cost him everything.

Book 44: Three Wishes by Liane Moriarty

My Rating: โญโญโญโญ 4 stars (out of 5)

Synopsis: I really enjoyed Three Wishes by Liane Moriarty, a funny and heartfelt story about thirty-three-year-old triplets; Lyn, Cat, and Gemma, whose tight bond, fierce personalities, and distinctly different life choices culminate in a dramatic birthday dinner in Sydney where Cat hurls a fondue fork at the unexpectedly pregnant Gemma. With its mix of humour, family drama, and emotional twists, it kept me hooked, and Iโ€™ll definitely be reading more by this author.

Book 45: The Widow’s Husband’s Secret Lie by Frieda McFadden

My Rating: โญโญโญ 3 stars (out of 5)

Synopsis: I really wanted to like The Widowโ€™s Husbandโ€™s Secret Lie: A Satirical Novella, but it ended up being my least favourite so far. Itโ€™s a fast-paced, tongue-in-cheek take on the domestic thriller: a grieving widow keeps seeing her dead husbandโ€™s face everywhere, unlocking a web of absurd twists and parodying every clichรฉ in the genre. Unfortunately, the satire felt more silly than clever in places, with over-the-top caricatures and forced gags that left me rolling my eyes instead of laughing. Certainly meant as satire – but for me, it didnโ€™t quite land.

Book 46: Home Stretch by Graham Norton

My Rating: โญโญโญ 3 stars (out of 5)

Synopsis: I didnโ€™t love Home Stretch as much as some of Graham Norton’s other books, but it was still a solid read. Set in 1987 in rural Ireland, it follows Connor, the survivor of a tragic car crash that kills three of his friends, as he flees shame and blame at home and rebuilds his life across Liverpool, London, and then New York. Itโ€™s a moving exploration of secrets, identity, and the pull of oneโ€™s roots.

Book 47: We Solve Murders by Richard Osman

My Rating: โญโญโญโญ 4 stars (out of 5)

Synopsis: I was pleasantly surprised by We Solve Murders as I was worried I wouldn’t enjoy it as much as The Thursday Murder Club series. It stars a new detective duo; Amy, a high-energy private security pro, and her father-in-law Steve, a retired cop whoโ€™d much rather stick to pub quiz nights and petting his cat – but theyโ€™re thrown headlong into a global caper when Amy is framed for multiple murders. Itโ€™s a globe-trotting adventure packed with humour, quirky characters, and warm and trusty relationships.

Book 48: Room by Emma Donoghue

My Rating: โญโญโญโญ4 stars (out of 5)

Synopsis: I found Room by Emma Donoghue incredibly haunting – in the most powerful way. Narrated by five-year-old Jack, who believes the small room he’s confined to is the entire world, the story plunges you into a world of innocence locked in captivity. As Jack and his โ€œMaโ€ navigate their grim reality with unwavering love, routines, and imaginative play, the narrative crackles with raw emotional intensity. The escape and the overwhelming adjustment to the outside are just as affecting: tender, unsettling, and unforgettable. Truly, a story that lingers long after the last page.

Book 49: Do Not Disturb by Frieda McFadden

My Rating: โญโญโญ3.5 stars (out of 5)

Synopsis: Iโ€™m working my way through all of Freida McFaddenโ€™s books, and Do Not Disturb was a quick, twisty read. It follows Quinn, on the run after killing her abusive husband, trapped by a snowstorm and forced to seek refuge at the eerie Baxter Motel, with a mysterious owner, a lingering silhouette in the window, and plenty of secrets hiding behind that โ€œDo Not Disturbโ€ sign. Not my favourite of hers, some parts felt a little predictable, but still an entertaining stop on my McFadden journey.

Book 50: Nine Perfect Strangers by Liane Moriarty

My Rating: โญโญโญ3.5 stars (out of 5)

Synopsis: I thought Nine Perfect Strangers by Liane Moriarty was an intriguing setup; nine stressed strangers arrive at the upscale Tranquillum House wellness retreat, each carrying emotional baggage. Under the direction of the enigmatic Masha, they endure increasingly extreme sessions (silence, bizarre therapy, micro-dosing psychedelics) that spiral into psychological manipulation and emotional revelations. But it wasnโ€™t my favourite Moriarty book – the story veers into genuinely strange territory, and by the end it felt a bit weird rather than satisfying.
