Motif Moods Granny Square Brimmed Hat

The pattern below is written just in US terms but you can view a handy conversion chart here on the blog.

Skill Level: Beginner / Easy

Size: To fit average woman’s size head:  23 inch circumference. With the brim folded down your hat should measure approx. 10 inches / 19cm tall and 10.6 inches / 25.4cm wide

Gauge: 7hdc = 2” [5 cm]

Materials

Yarn: Stylecraft Aran (100% Acrylic); [196 meters] / 100 grams):  1218 Parchment (A, 1 ball), 1422 Aspen (B, 1 ball), 1083 Pomegranate (C, 1 ball),

Hook: US size I/9 (5.5 mm)

Notions: Large eye tapestry needle, XL pom pom maker

Pattern Notes

  • Using a stitch marker: The main section of the hat is worked in rnds; you may find it useful to place a stitch marker in the top of the first st to mark start of rnd.
  • Hidden seam: Avoid uneven seams or gaping holes in your hat by skipping over your chain stitches at the beginning of the round. Joins should be made to your first stitch. You should start your next round in the same stitch as your chains stitches. This allows the chains to become “filler” stitches and keeps your seam from having large holes.
  • The ch2 at the beginning of a rnd do not count as a st.

Merry Marbles Makealong starts today!

Merry Marbles Crochet Make-along, 26 December 2024 - 31 January 2025. Find out all the details on www.keepcalmandcrochetonuk.com

Happy MAL day folks!

It’s here! I’m thrilled to announce the start of our 2024 winter makealong, Merry Marbles! This festive crochet adventure promises to be full of colour, joy, and creativity, and I can’t wait for you to join in.

All the folks that ordered the exclusive Merry Marbles MAL kits should have already received the gorgeous Yarn Whisperer yarn (plus fab extras), and the pattern has already been sent out to everyone (from Kitey – so maybe check your junk mail if the pattern doesn’t seem to have appeared).

Close up of the Merry Marbles crochet makealong yarn kit alongside similarly coloured toy marbles.

As usual the exclusive kit colourway that Kitey has come up with for this winter is really different from what we’ve had before. I’m a massive lover of rainbows and the vibrant tones of the mini skeins in the kit were just such a delight!

Each yarn kit contained a 100g (425m) skein of ‘Moonlit Marble’ which is a gorgeously soft hand of undyed yarn with a exciting pop of sparkly stelina running through it. Alongside this we have combined six 20g (85m) skeins; Purple Swirl, Blue Vein, Emerald Gleam, Amber Glow, Tangerine Quartz and Scarlett Shard.

And Amanda from Mrs G Makes has done it again! She has chosen the most ideal stitch markers to accompany our makealong—beautiful beads that look just like colourful marbles, adding the perfect playful touch to every stitch!

Close up of the Mrs G Makes stitch makers made for the Merry Marbles makealong inspired by colourful toy marbles.

I had such fun working with this particular palette for this crochet design. All the colours worked so well together to create a unique design. I hope you’ll agree that the cowl that will add a wonderful pop of colour to any outfit and will make a fun addition to your wardrobe – I have to confess I’ve already been wearing mine!

For the full information about this particular make along (MAL) you can find all the details here (or via the top menu of this blog under the tab ‘CALS AND MALS’). But generally the idea is that the MAL is a relaxed event designed to be made during the winter months.

The yarn kit for the Merry Marbles Makealong is shown in pre-wound balls alongside a wooden yarn bowl and a small ceramic dish with colourful marbles inside.

If you’ve fallen in love with how the kit looks, but hadn’t previously signed up to the MAL, Kitey has a couple of kits left, then he’s offering any future required kits on a pre-order basis. You can either message him via The Yarn Whisperer website or send him a DM on Instagram to request a kit. Kits are priced at £45 + postage and new orders will be posted when he opens his shop in the new year.

SHARING WITH THE #MERRYMARBLEMAL COMMUNITY

We hope you’ll share your photos with us on social media (facebook, twitter or instagram) or as a project on Ravelry – we’d love to see what you make! We will be sharing our progress with the hashtags #merrymarblesmal #kcacouk #yarnwhisperer #mrsgmakes. If you’re blogging, feel free to leave links to your post(s) in the comments here.

You also may wish to make sure you are signed up to blog (below) and / or my mailing list to get a reminder when new blog posts, discounts or new pattern releases are available – I’ll just say that Kitey and I already have a summer and mega winter project in mind for 2025!

It’s the perfect stash-busting crochet project and works up quickly, so you can whip up several to spread the joy this Christmas.

To add a touch of extra charm to my festive gnome, I reached for an adorable wooden Christmas Tree button from my Dear Ewe shop. Pattern Re-release | Poppy Appeal 2024

Back in 2020 I was honoured to be asked to create an official Royal British Legion (RBL) crochet poppy design for Deramores. With the closure of Deramores (in Feb 2022) I’ve been slowly working my way through any associated patterns to add to my pattern shops, however as this was a pattern was originally designed in collaboration with a charity it’s been a bit of a different task to sort out.

Pin for later:

A collage of a range of crochet poppies. Finished crochet poppy is bright red with a black centre, perfect as a remembrance piece or handmade accessory.

The poppy is a well-known and well-established symbol, one that carries a wealth of history and meaning with it. It’s a symbol of both remembrance and hope for a peaceful future. Personally it always makes me think of my Granddad who fought in World War 2.

I’ve thought about the best way to move forward with this pattern and this is what I have come up with. This poppy pattern will cost £2.50 (approx. $3.05) and will be available in all of my pattern stores (see links below).

Close-up of a handmade crochet poppy brooch pinned to the front pocket of denim dungarees. The vibrant red petals and dark centre of the poppy stand out against the blue denim, adding a delicate, handmade touch to the outfit.

For the sake of the re-release and transparency for every purchase made I will donate 100% of the RRP to the Royal British Legion to support the Armed Forces community. My time for setting up the PDFs, any pattern admin, platform fees and adding the patterns to the pattern store I’ll be doing free of charge. Totals will be totted up yearly and any amounts will go directly to the Royal British Legion.

In the new update, I’ve included step-by-step photos for the poppy pattern to make it even easier to follow along! These visuals will guide you through each stage of the process, helping you see exactly how your project should look as it comes together. Whether you’re a beginner or just need a little extra guidance, these photos will take you through the details, ensuring a smoother and more enjoyable crochet experience.

A hand holds a crochet poppy brooch, in the background are many crocheted poppies.

For your poppies you can use any weight yarn but I would recommend a DK (Light worsted weight yarn), such as Paintbox Simply DK in Rose Red, Grass Green and Pure Black, 3.25mm (US size D/3) hook. For reference an average sized 100g (276m / 302yds) ball of red yarn you can easily make about 20 poppies.

There’s no wrong way to wear a poppy, you could glue gun them to a headband, wreath, blanket or cushion, or just add a brooch pin, to honour and remember the service and the sacrifice of those within the Armed Forces. And if like me, you’re wearing a poppy from a previous year, you can make sure you still go and donate a couple of quid to such a worthy charity.

A small child’s hand holds a single handmade crochet poppy, showcasing its bright red petals and dark center. Surrounding the hand is a mass of other crochet poppies, creating a vibrant display of red blooms in various sizes, each with intricate detailing.

If you enjoyed this pattern please give it a love, or leave a comment or review on the platform you got it from – and  I hope you’ll share your photos with me on social media (facebook, twitter or instagram) or as a project on Ravelry – I love to see what you make! And finally you may wish to make sure you are signed up to blog (below) and / or my mailing list to get a reminder when new blog posts, discounts or new pattern releases are available.

Until next time folks! Happy hooking, keep calm and crochet on my friends xx

I Like Crochet Magazine | Frosted Forest Houndstooth Wrap

As we cosy up for the winter season, I’m thrilled to share my latest project: the Frosted Forest Houndstooth Wrap, a beautiful addition to any winter wardrobe that’s as stylish as it is comfortable. Featured in the December edition of I Like Crochet magazine, this wrap brings together a classic houndstooth stitch pattern with a modern frosty colour scheme that’s perfect for colder months.

Houndstooth is one of those timeless patterns that I think always adds a touch of sophistication, and this wrap is no exception. The Frosted Forest Houndstooth Wrap combines contrasting tones to create that bold, traditional checkered effect while still feeling soft and subtle. With a gorgeous drape and enough length to wrap yourself up comfortably, it’s ideal for layering over your favourite winter outfits, whether you’re heading out for a brisk winter walk or curling up with a book by the fire.

I used Scheepjes Colour Crafter for this wrap; it’s a yarn I’ve used for many projects and it never disappoints! This DK (light worsted) yarn is a premium 100% acrylic (328 yarns [300mters] / 100g) that’s wonderfully soft with a smooth, even texture. Plus, it’s hypoallergenic, making it perfect for clothing and wraps that need to be both snug and gentle on the skin.

Three balls of yarn in soft hues sit on a table top surrounded by crochet notions, a small potted plant, and a steaming cup of tea, creating a cosy crafting scene.

One of my favourite things about this pattern is the soothing rhythm of crocheting the houndstooth design, it’s repetitive enough to be a relaxing experience — perfect for an evening by the fire with a cup of tea. The houndstooth pattern is created through simple colour changes, so if you’ve been wanting to dip your toes into colorwork, this is a fabulous project to try – a great pattern for beginners.

The wrap pairs well with neutral outfits and works wonders with winter whites and forest greens, embracing the essence of a snowy woodland. For those who love a bit of a twist on classic style, the houndstooth design here is a fantastic way to make a statement without overwhelming your look.

The Frosted Forest Houndstooth Wrap is styled as a long, cozy scarf around a mannequin, set against a lush background of ivy. The classic houndstooth pattern contrasts beautifully with the greenery, enhancing the wrap’s warm texture and elegant drape.

If you’re already subscribed to I Like Crochet, you can find the Frosted Forest Houndstooth Wrap in their current issue. It’s a project that will not only elevate your crochet skills but will also add a stunning piece to your winter collection. And for those new to houndstooth, this wrap is a perfect introduction to this classic pattern.

If you haven’t heard of  I Like Crochet magazine before it’s a US bi-monthly digital magazine which is published by the creators of AllFreeCrochet.com. Free Crochet Pattern | Feline Fancy Headband

Hello lovelies! If you’re on the hunt for a quick, fun, and adaptable crochet project then I have the purr-fect freebie pattern for you! Whether you’re looking for a last minute project for Halloween, World Book Day, or just want to add a touch of feline flair to your outfit, the Feline Fancy Headband ticks all the boxes.

Pin this project for later:

A Pinterest collage showcasing a crochet cat headband, including close-ups of the sparkly yarn, the headband styled on a log slice with greenery, and worn outdoors, highlighting its cozy texture and fun design.

Crafted with Cygnet Jellybaby Glitter Chenille Chunky (Bulky) Yarn which is a 92% polyester and 8% metallic thread, chunky weight (bulky) yarn that comes in 100g balls.  Each ball has approximately 120m / 131 yds and has a lovely sparkle about it and it’s also super soft to crochet with.

It means that this headband is not only adorable but also gives off a subtle sparkle—perfect for catching the light at a party or event. Plus, chenille yarn gives the headband a soft, plush feel, making it comfortable to wear for hours. I used a 5.5 mm (US I/J hook) for this project, and the only other thing you will need is a no teeth style headband (it doesn’t matter what colour as you won’t see it). Using only about 40g of yarn and a basic headband, it’s an affordable and stylish option for dressing up, perfect for budget-friendly costumes without skimping on fun!

I made mine with InkSpot (018) but you could other colours like orange, grey and cream for more traditional cats or purple for a unique feline look. This headband is super versatile – while it’s perfect for Halloween; a simple black dress or matching outfit, and you’re good to go! You can also easily repurpose it for World Book Day by choosing a character like the Cheshire Cat, or Julia Donaldson’s Tabby McTat, or any feline from your favourite children’s story.

It’s also a great option for children’s costumes—simple, cute, and playful without being over the top. But let’s be honest, it’s just as perfect for adults who want to join in the fun without going full costume mode. Who wouldn’t want to channel their inner kitty with a chic, glittery headband?

A handmade crochet cat headband with sparkly ears displayed on a rustic log slice, with green foliage adding a natural touch in the background.

The Feline Fancy Headband is a perfect last-minute project, with its simple, beginner-friendly pattern that can be made in no time, even if you’re new to crochet! So, if you’re looking for a fast, beginner-friendly project that still delivers a stylish result, this Feline Fancy is a must-try! With its snuggly texture and glittery finish, it’s a little bit of magic you can wear anytime.

The Feline Fancy Headband can be accessed for free when you enter your email and sign in via Grow. Or you can buy it as an ad-free PDF using the links below (handy if you’d like all the instructions and pictures in a nice document which you can print and take notes on without relying on your phone or an internet connection).

Mischievous Magpie MAL | The Reveal & Pattern Release

Apologies for the delay with this release, the summer just flew by and I don’t know where September and October has gone! But I’m thrilled to at last share the final details of the Mischievous Magpie Shawlette with you! This shawlette was part of our 2024 summer make-a-long (MAL), and I’m beyond excited to unveil the completed pattern with all the special elements that made this project a joy to work on with each of you.

Pin for later:

Collage for Pinterest showcasing the Mischievous Magpie make-a-long, featuring images of completed shawlette

For those that weren’t aware this latest make-along was a collaboration between myself, Kitey, aka The Yarn Whisperer, and Mrs G Makes and was all about embracing the spirit of magpies—curious, playful, and just a bit mischievous!

This pattern was designed with versatility in mind. It features an elegant triangle shape that drapes effortlessly around your shoulders, perfect for those breezy evenings, early fall outings, or layering up as we head into the cooler months.

Collage featuring hand-dyed yarn inspired by magpie plumage, with skeins of semi-solid black, undyed cream, and vibrant sparkly blue tones. The yarn colours reflect the nearby images of two magpies, showcasing their contrasting black and white feathers and flashes of iridescent blue, mimicking the birds' striking, natural elegance.

As always it’s been an absolute delight to work with Kitey and his gorgeously coloured yarn, I love these collabs we do – it always provides me with an opportunity to work with gorgeous yarn which in turn makes the design process super enjoyable.

The yarn choice for the Mischievous Magpie Shawlette was inspired by the magpie’s striking plumage. Kitey perfectly captured the bold, contrasting colours and subtle sheen with a semi-solid black for depth and drama paired with an undyed yarn reminiscent of light catching on a feather’s edge. To complete the look, a touch of sparkly blue adds a wonderful pop of colour and shimmer, mirroring the flashes of iridescent blue that magpies flaunt in the sunlight.

Close-up of two stitch markers from the Mischievous Magpie make-a-long kit: one featuring a tiny enamel bird with black and white detailing, and the other an iridescent bead that catches the light with a subtle shimmer, adding a playful, magpie-inspired touch to each crochet project.

And in amongst the kit there were, as always, the cutest crochet accessories from the fabulous Mrs G Makes. Continuing the magpie theme she a cute enamel bird with black, white and blue detailing, and the other an iridescent bead that catches the light with a subtle shimmer, adding a playful, magpie-inspired touch to each crochet project.

It makes us all incredibly happy to see YOUR photos of the various stages of progress you make with your projects on social media – and I hope you will continue to do so as you finish your shawlettes’ if you haven’t had chance to make it yet.

Collage of Mischievous Magpie crochet shawlette works-in-progress, created by participants in the summer make-a-long, showcasing various stages of completion.

Although the official end date of the MAL has come to an end DO NOT feel any panic or worry that you didn’t keep up or haven’t even started yet. The deadline was there just for those people that like a deadline, for everyone else, enjoy it when you have the time to use the yarn and / or make the shawlette – there is no rush to this crochet makealong! And sometime in the future you will have a beautiful finished object that you can gift for someone special or to enjoy yourself.

Now that the MAL is over, I have listed the pattern in my usual pattern stores for you to make your own version of the Mischievous Magpie triangular shawlette.

I would suggest three different colours work best; 100g of blue, 2 x 50g of black and white with a 3mm (Closest US size D/3) hook. The pattern includes a written version with supporting charts, detailed stitch explanations, and is available in both UK and US terminology.

We do hope that you’ve enjoyed this fun make-along, I know Kitey, Amanda and I have thoroughly enjoyed it!

A Decade of Crafting Joy with I Like Crochet with Special Offer

This year I Like Crochet magazine is celebrating their 10th birthday! It made me realise that I’ve been working with I Like Crochet for the past 8 years, and I honestly can’t believe how fast the time has flown! It feels like just yesterday when I first contributed, and now, looking back, I’m amazed at how much we’ve grown together.

Text I Like Crochet, Decade of Crochet, Editors' Top 10 Favourite Patterns alongside colourful photos of 10 different crochet designs.

If you haven’t heard of  I Like Crochet magazine before it’s a US bi-monthly digital magazine which is published by the creators of AllFreeCrochet.com. To celebrate their 10-year milestone, editors Nicola and Caitlin each set out to choose five of their favourite patterns, I can’t even imagine how difficult a job that was out of the hundreds of patterns they’ve published over the years. But of those ten patterns I was delighted, and very honoured, to see they’d chosen one of my designs, and it’s actually one of my favourites too.

Nicola chose the Sandstone Shawl which was a design that was published a couple of years ago for a summer edition of I Like Crochet. It’s a large wrap which utilises King Cole Opium yarn that creates the unique textured and lacy look – and I love, love, LOVED how it turned out!

The crocheted Sandstone Shawl which was featured in the August 2022 edition of I Like Crochet magazine.
© I Like Crochet – August 2022

“I had a vision for this design, and Heather rose to the challenge, exceeding my expectations. In my quest to make summer crochet more prominent and popular, I imagined a Stevie Nicks, boho moment with this shawl in a field of tall grasses. During the photoshoot, I remember not wanting to move on to the next piece because this shawl was so magical to photograph. The texture of the yarn and the combination of stitches truly came together to create this boho dream shawl.” – Nicola, Editor

💕 SAVE THE SANDSTONE SHAWL ON RAVELRY 💕

How lovely were her comments! ❤️ It got me thinking about what my favourite ten patterns were that I’ve designed for I Like Crochet over the years. It was a tricky one but I narrowed it down to:

  • Cherry Blossom Wrap (Apr 2016)
  • Tahoe Scarf and Hat (Feb 2022)
  • Sandstone Shawl (Aug 2022)
  • Evie Pom Hat (Oct 2021)
  • Anchor Cove Shawl (Jun 2021)
  • Delani Diamond C2C scarf (Aug 2023
  • Dale the Woodland Deer (Oct 2019)
  • Chevron Flair Cowl (Aug 2020)
  • Puppy Love Coin Purse (Feb 2022)
  • Dachshund thru’ the snow (Dec 2018)
Collage of the favourite ten designs that I have had published in I Like Crochet Magazine over the years.

It was really interested to see the Editors reflect on their favourite designs, from cardigans to decorative pillows, with each design each telling a unique story. You can read their full blog post on the I Like Crochet website: Celebrating a Decade of Creativity: I Like Crochet’s 10th Birthday.
